I just found out that a skier was killed at Hunter. He was a very good Nastar racer, 56 years old. He went off the trail, 42nd st, an easy blue, and hit a tree. The only reason I am posting this is that conditions are so weird lately that this could happen to anyone. Ice, crud, slush, boilerplate, we got it all. He was wearing a helmet but hit so hard and fast that it didn't matter. Be careful out there.

He was going from Lower 42nd to the race course at high carving speed - came around the top of the B Lift(Between the F lift and the B lift) to make the turn down to the racecourse and went into the woods across from the B Lift... It had nothing to do with condtions... Just a freak thing..

A 50-year-old Greene County man died after a skiing accident Thursday morning at Hunter Mountain Ski Bowl in the Catskills.

State Police said Slawomir Wozny of Tannersville was on the lower "42nd Street" trail about 11:30 a.m. when he lost control while trying to make a turn at high speed, went off the trail and
struck a tree and a boulder.

Wozny, reportedly an experienced skier, suffered head injuries and was treated at the scene by the Hunter Mountain Ski Patrol. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

a sad event. that is two deaths in one week involving folks of good ability in their middle age going off the trail and hitting trees. both freak accidents it seems.

yet another reminder that wearing a helmet does not significantly reduce your chance of death or head injury when skiing at very high speed. it may help in some cases, but helmets are most useful at low to moderate speeds. be careful out there while you are ripping those high speed arcs, this type of thing could happen to any one.

I'm sorry he died.

But anyone who knows Hunter and the spot where he went off into the woods knows that ripping high speed GS arcs between the offload ramp of one lift and the onload line of another is just not smart. I know, it was a weekday and not crowded. Who knows, someone getting off of B lift might have gotten his attention just long enough to mess his timing up and next thing he was in the woods.

This one had nothing to do with conditions. It was poor judgement on the skier's part. Sad.

Even sadder was that his young daughter (granddaughter?) was in a NASTAR race yesterday with my son Peter. That really hurts.

From what I heard - he didn't even try to stop himself - people are thinking he may've had a heart attack or something..
