Since its summer and its likely that inane discussions will rule for a few months, I may as well give a huge Kudos to the unsung hero that we all love and hate.
The dentist.
My husband has a phobia of the dentist because of pain that was inflicted by an old fashioned dentist as a child. Today, things are not what they once were, and its much easier to keep that smile!

So, as we praise the new technology involved in our ski gear and apparel, lets not forget the new technology that helps us keep that silly grin on our face when we're hitting the slopes!

I learned recently that my dentist is moving out of state which sucks because she was great. I'm sticking with the office though cuz my hygienist is great too. There was probably a 7 or 8 year period when I didn't go to the dentist at all. Now I get a cleaning faithfully every six months and try to floss every night.

I think the best thing to ever happen to my teeth is the invention of the Sonicare tooth brush.

I mount the bristles on mine one milimeter left of center as I find it really helps the brush's performance in the troughs along the gum line.

My dentist is great. I just recently had to have a cavity taken care of on one of my wisdom teeth, a pretty difficult spot to get to. He managed to preform the procedure without causing any pain and quicker than I was expecting and then thanked me several times for being a good patient and not making him stop a bunch of times.

Well there's absolutely no way I could say anything negative about this post! ;)

+5

And if you think so of the technology that we tooth folks have at our disposal today has improved things over the "old school" ways of dentistry, what some of the manufacturer R+D folks are talking about for the coming years is really cool - both interms of needle free pain management (or painless management might be a better discription) and esthetics. Heck, they've already been able to successfully and predicatbly been able to grow teeth in mice via implantation of certain cells and theer's talk of trying to adapt that model to humans in the future! I figure if that happens, I'll just be going down to the dental version of Home Depot, buying a box of "molar seeds" and some "dental miracle grow", plant the sucker and watch things grow :)

There might be hope for you yet then Greg! ;)

A good hygienist who you feel comfortable with is a really great asset to any office, and tough to find too(there's a decent shortage of hygenists in many areas of the country). I'm fortunate enough to have 4 great ones in my office who in all seriousness are one of the big reasons why my partner and have avery loyal patient base.

LOL! But yes, they are great brushes(all we sell in my office). I'll break out the tool kit later and try the 1mm left adjustment on mine tonight ;)

In situations like that I will literally say to my patient "Don't be offended by this, but you've got a BIG mouth, and I mean that as the highest form of a compliment as that makes my job SO much easier!"

My childhood dentist was a real dick..so I stopped going to him after college..he did a good job but he was always really nosy...when I lived in Montana I went 2.5 years without going to the dentist..I went to a new dentist and they gave me a deep cleaning and I was scolded for my neglect and the new dentist wasn't very friendly...so now I go to a dentist whose a friend of a friend who is great..the hygentist does a really thorough job cleaning my teeth and I save 30 bucks by paying in cash...I actually look forward to going to the dentist now because I like the feeling of having the tarter removed...in a sick way like when I get rid of ear wax..

Props to the dentists..they deserve the 6-figure salaries for having to smell everybodies stinky breath..

Ha, No, I have a very good dentist here in Michigan.
Though, I'm guessing he'd like to have us as patients. ;)

I was just thinking, the most important thing I wear when I ski is my GRIN!!!!
Without the grin, all the other stuff is just stuff.

.

I actually have 3 bonafied what I would call ski addicts as patients, (a back country/MRG/teleperson, a patroler at Mount Snow, and a Killington person) and I've now learned that whenever they need work done I need to schedule atleast an extra 15 minutes because of all the ski talking that inevitably happens. As it's going on, my assistant(a non skier) just sits back and rolls her eyes ;)

Wow I've NEVER seem such expressions of Devotion and Esteem for the Dental Profession ---- makes me not want to believe all that crap i've read about dentists and rates of suicide :D

Seriously a Good dentist like a good Practioner of most any profession is VALUABLE and it helps as Camp says IF they have "hot " assistants

Hey, were improving in that area now too, we're not the most likely to knock ourselves off anymore, lawyers, surgeons, EMT's and air traffic controllers amongst others have surpassed us now ;)
