I despise the excuse, "It doesn't matter, it's just the internet/forum/email/chat/tweet."

It's communication, and it deserves to be done correctly.

I don't mind if it's truly just a text or something. Problem is...some youngsters don't know the line between casual and professional. I work with many <30yo "kids" and a few have atrocious writing, punctuation and capitalization in email. Drives me batty.

I'm not so sure there should be a line, really. There's a line between what topics you can/should discuss, sure, but in the end the communication should be clear and understandable, and that is best done through an adherence to the established and proper rules of spelling and grammar. Maybe some leniency on the enforcement of the rules, but never blatant disregard for them.

But, that's just my $0.02, likely in part the result of having an English teacher for a mother.

If you want to be taken seriously, write as ctenidae describes above. If you don't care, let first impressions be the judge. My initial assessment of one's abilities (written or otherwise) are judged by the first paragraph written. If you don't care enough to write carefully, I think twice about your ability to think thoughtfully. Until the inept rule the world, it's going to be that way.

I never really thought about it or even judge anyone - it is a forum. Work is another story.

Kids these days....

Get over it, the whole point of text messages is that they are quick and easy, not one person is expecting someone to find semi colons during a quick conversations. Otherwise you just seem old and are dating yourself.

Now the point on professionalism is spot on, and I think the younger generations that have grown up fully in the world of the internet have trouble separating the times where they need to be professional.

I admit, special rules for text messaging may apply (a la the short hand used in telegrams). I'm not much of a texter, so maybe I am just old.
