Pico Peak, Killington Peak, Snowden Peak, Rams Head, VT
Date Hiked: 09/30
Trails(s) Hiked: Sherburne Pass Trail to Appalachian/Long Trail, various trails/bushwacking on the way back.
Total Distance: About 12 miles including deviations
Difficulty: Moderate other than two short steeps (just below Pico and the last part of the ascent to Killington).
Conditions: Mostly sunny, increasing clouds as day continued, very wet trails
Special Required Equipment: None
I started off at the Sherburne Pass trailhead, went to Pico Peak, then to Killington Peak, then Snowden Peak and Rams Head via the ski trails. From Rams Head, I bushwacked my way back to the AT/LT, then went up the Connection trail (the incomplete Pico-Killington connection a few years back), and then meandered around the front face of Pico.
There were very few people on the trails at 9 AM (when the weather was the best), however by late afternoon the parking lot and trails were fairly busy (and the rain was starting to move in).
I found the Rams Head hike (the abandoned summit) and the Connection trail to be pretty interesting...surprisingly, the latter is very well maintained and could be skied with only a few inches of snow.
Visibility around midday was decent - you could see the Sugarbush Range/Camel's Hump/Mansfield pretty well, as well as ADKs in NY, southern Greens, the Whites, Ascutney, and some other peaks on southern New Hampshire that I didn't take the braincells to process when I was looking.
