2006 Trip Report #: 49!
Resort: Pico Mountain
Conditions: SC/FG
Weather: Clouds Breaking to reveal Bluebird skies, highs in the 40’s. NW winds 10-15.
Trip Report: Back to Pico. You are reading it right. Was planning on going to Burke today, but Ms. TB did not feel like making the drive, so we did one more day at Pico. After sleeping in, we got there at about 11am and got a great parking spot. The lodge was quiet.
We took a warm up on the lower mountain, which was beginning to soften, but still MG:
Then we hit the top. Upper KA was scratchy, but soft on the extreme sides. 49er was the other option, and as usual, it was FG and ice with some loose snow on top. We did laps on these two to hit Middle Pike and KA, which got softer as the day went on.
After a couple runs, Ms. TB suggested we stay at the Golden HSQ because it was softer down there. We spent an hour or so enjoying the corn snow and ripping some nice turns. Those trails are almost edge to edge...amazing.
TB enjoying the snow with a weird expression...
We went in and had a mean burito from the Mexican Stand at the front of the lodge. Very reasonably priced...we've been meaning to try the place. Having that, with our free sodas from completing the surveys, went well with the sunshine coming in from the windows as we ate.
After lunch, we headed back to the top and hit KA and 49er before taking a break at the lodge. Ms. TB did a couple more runs before calling it a day, and I headed to the top. Did Upper KA and cut over to see what Sunset '71 was like...it was not soft at all and I cut over to 49er. On the final run, at 4pm, I started at 49er and cut back over to KA to finish it off and get some pics:
I thanked the lifties again. An amazing day...the snow did not soften as much as we had hoped, only getting to Middle KA and no higher. Better than nothing. We're going to miss Pico...but hopefully it will be back soon!
