Resort: Pico Mountain
Date Skied 01/20/07 10:30am to 2:30pm
Conditions: Sun and clouds, some snow, 10 degrees when I started, some wind.
Trip Report: Today was to be a trip to Mount Snow, but a last minute change of plans and I ended up at Pico solo. I was going to ski Snow alone, but with the wind advisory I figured they may have wind hold(s) so I decided Pico might me the best place to go on my ASC pass. On the way I was treated to some real snow falling from the sky, Route 100 got kind of slick on my way up.
It was snowing lightly at Pico when I arrived. The mountain looked nice and white. While riding up the Golden Eagle lift saw fresh snow on the trails, a rare sight these days for me. I headed over to the Summit Express lift via the Fools Gold trail. Wow! Skiing on snow with no hidden boiler plate. It was great, the first time for me this season.
As I was riding the lift, the Pike trail looked well covered. They were blowing snow on the mid section. The upper section of Pike was closed, not quite enough snow to open it. My first run down was 49er. It started off good, but all of the fresh snow / man made snow became either skied or wind blown off. The dreaded boiler plate was evident in sections. If you stuck to the sides the coverage was better. I did the Upper Ka a couple of times. There were some large bumps, and I think most were from the snow making guns. I did the following to the base: 49er to Pike or 49er to Easy Street to mid Ka to Pike or Easy Street to Pike. Those were my picks on the summit. There was never a lift line for the summit lift. If you did not have a face mask on, it was brutal skiing today.
To wrap up the day I took the Golden Express and skied down Fool’s Gold, Expressway, Gold Rush. The lower trails were better covered even though most of the skiers were on these. One time I took Prospector down. I am not sure if was officially open, there was no rope up and I followed a group of people down it. I think I lost some of the bottoms of my skis hitting the saplings.
I took the triple twice and had a blast skiing down the trail (not sure the name, it is just like one big open slope). There were some nice moguls forming!
All in all it was a great day to be out. Someone who was riding the lift with me said they left Killington as it was packed and she saw to many people coming down on the ski patrol sleds, so they left and came to Pico. Also on my way up and back, the Skyeship gondola at Killington was not operating.
