I guess it depends. If it's a yes/no kind of question with little reason to elaborate, then they are bad for stimulating discussion. Maybe it doesn't even matter...

I think poles are good..when I first learned to ski..I didn't have poles and I had to skate alot on the flats...the combination of poling and skating is mad steezy yo..plus you can use your poles as a pivot point for a jump turn..
