Many people's life styles involve breaking out the clubs and boat in March. To each their own is all I am saying...

For sure, really what else is there to say? Are people who don't want to ski later then March suppose to ski into April to make people who want the lifts to keep running happy?

Staying open in April is all about keeping the season pass holders happy anyways. If you have a pass and your mountain is closing earlier then you like, let them know that you and yours will be looking at other options if the early closing continues.

I know [thread="25300"]I was whining[/thread] about the end of the season fast approaching, but it looks like some folks have already quit. And they seem to frown on spring snow... WTF?

Next to powder..nice spring corn is almost as good..mmmm..buttery corn..yummy..The day I quit skiing before late April or May will be a sad sad day..

I'm an occasional golfer..and I quit golf by Halloween most years..while my Dad plays every month of the year. But he's diehard..I play 15 days a year..he plays 80;..

It's the same with skiing..most skiers go skiing like they're going to an amusement park..they try out the different runs..they aren't there to master the sport..just for shitz and giggles..

Glad to hear that. The arguement I usually hear is the opposite "spring skiers are all pass holders so the resorts are lossing money the later they stay open"...

I'm not a pass holder of any mountain. I go skiing where the snow is best. And I'm a big fan of spring skiing. Warm weather, soft snow, low prices for both lift tickets and lodging. So, the resort that closes early in spring won't get my money, and the money my friends bring...

The assumption that only hardcore skiers ski in spring is totally wrong. Me and my friends are not hardcore so we don't ski in -30 degree and 35 mph winds. We are not good enough to handle the ice with rocks showing... ;) Whimpy but smart skiers ski in spring!

I always make a point to spend a little $$$$ in the bar or ski shop in the late season to help bottom line. I wish more areas stayed open later-easier to justify higher season pass price. Maybe someone in New England will step up like last year.

Doesn't help the ski areas operating budget

...and

....makes people hesitant to spend $60 in gas round trip for a day trip up to the mountains from the cities

DOUBLE WHAMMY

sux :(

It goes beyond that. Home heating fuels are up and the bill have come in. Ski dollars have fed the plow guys too who needed a little more this year for fuel.

There are plenty of non-skiing reasons to be tired of this winter. see this:

That being said. I'm hoping to make it into May though I'm sure I don't represent the majority.

I was talking with my colleague today and he assumed skiing season is over that all the snow is gone. I had to teach him that it takes lots of rain and long period of warm weather to completely melt away deep snow base on ski hill.

Good point. I was looking at the "how deep is the snowpack in your yard" thread. You don't need to go far into NH to find lots of snow.

Obviously everyone who commented on this post know the deal.

Know someone who bailed last Friday to play golf... His loss as it was probably my second best day. Nearly 100% open, corn w/little slush, warmer temps, low crowds, etc...

Guess some people think the deep base at most areas is already gone?

I've been skiing into May for 25 years. The "new" KMart is really screwing with my lifestyle. I really like the relaxed atmosphere where you don't bother booting up until it softens at 10:00 and you linger in the parking lot after the lifts stop spinning sucking down cocktails and packing up the BBQ grill.

Spring skiing requires a level of skill and fitness that excludes a good 80% of the skiing market. It's no surprise that intermediate-oriented mountains tend to close long before their snow has melted. There's enough of a market to support 2 or 3 ski resorts running fairly deep into May. I'll re-assess after April 13th but I'll probably get a Sugarbush spring pass if it looks like I'll get enough days out of it.

Umm.....you can start using it on Monday. Why wait until 4/13? For $200, it's almost a no brainer if you're nearby. 3 or 4 days and you're ahead.

Doesn't March consistantly have the best monthly snowfall for Vermont? It's amazing to me but I've got friends that ask is there still snow in Vermont? When I tell them that March is the best snow month they can't believe it. Hell, last year there was more snow in April than January. Now I see why skier visits plummets after mid -March.
To me the next month to 6 weeks is the best of the season, let's hope this year is too.

March can actually have some of the biggest crowds of the year at Cannon if we have 50 degree sunny days. The majority of the skiers during those days are not passholders there for sure.April is a different story.People have started to move on to another season.Better for us skiers I say.
