Steep part of Preacher just above entrance to Devils Playground is getting a bit scraped off

Anyone ever hike and ski the peak in between Wilderness and Vista? Seems like there should be some decent side country up there that wouldn't take long to hike up

Thanks for the intel. How's BV with the kids? I ski the woods so good for me. I've always been a supporter of the indy's and likely a EPIC refugee next year.

SO increasingly likes the area, we all know about Stowe's issues so the hunt for a "home" mountain continues.

Devils Playground, this one lives up to its name, photos do not do it justice, has one very steep section that is very challenging

I hiked it once when wilderness was closed just out of curiosity. I dunno if I’d recommend it. I ended up at a weather tower. Then I got to the top of wilderness and skied untracked to the base which was nice. But hiking took a while and I saw no obvious ski lines. That being said I am a total Bv noob and I’m sure people who know it and the side country network well would have had a better result on that hike

One thing to note, if you do not have an RFID card, and/or you are using your Indy pass, you must go to the “ticket cube” in the main base area, up the metal stairs from the hotel valet loop. Makes it a bit of a challenge if the main parking lot is full, as it was both days this weekend, and they are directing traffic to the Timberline base, where the new lodge is not yet fully open and does not have any ticketing services. Advise to arrive early on the weekend, or try to sweet talk the valet into letting you double park for 5 minutes.

Here is a good guide for the back country at Bolton. It is quite extensive.
Bolton Backcountry
Also, there used to be a guy named Jay Silveria that would post all kinds of trip reports on his personal site. I can't remeber what it is anymore. He is on the Weather Forum know as J spin. He regularaly post trip reports from bolton and stowe and is a good photographer also.

the backcountry/nordic map at least validates that i didn't miss any obvious ski lines hiking from vista to wilderness. the backcountry all appears to be skier's right of wilderness terrain

Thanks for mentioning the backcountry map on the BV website. Any comments on ‘Snow Hole’, it looks like you could lap it off the Wilderness lift

More challenging is turning left into the trees a few yards down preacher - you can get in trouble in there.

Devils Playground was challenging enough for me :) Are you talking about Cobrass Woods, or the unmarked area above it ? Would eventually like to try all the on-map glades and woods, but not so sure if they are tougher than Devils Playground.

Lots of hobblebush and scraggly evergreens, not much in the way of ski lines, at least last time I was up there. It is one of those spots that seems so likely to have good skiing, but the vegetation isn't exactly friendly.

I remember skiing the Cobrass Woods area back in high school when tree skiing was still frowned upon. Mount Snow had the Freefall woods lined with "no tree skiing" sign. I think it was Montage in PA where you would get yelled at if you even did the smallest jump. Times sure have changed.

Must remind myself to never watch a selfie stick video again. Why the hell would I want to watch some ahole’s face for almost the whole video?

kids with zero skills ass sliding terrain and the video gives you no sense of the actual terrain.

When I embarrass myself with poor skiing in tough terrain, I have the dignity to not post it on the interwebz.
