Now that new real estate sales have slowed to a crawl I believe it is time that they sell Jay.

Real Estate is about location, location, location. Unless you are from Montreal, Burlington, or one of the handful of rich folks from the Newport area, Jay's location for anything but skiing SUCKS. That said, A LOT of people drive hours on end to ski there....but in the summer they have a golf course. Wow. I just don't think it is enough of a four season resort to sustain lots of real estate development. Yet.

Things could change...

I agree with Trailboss. Even though Jay has incredible terrain and far and away the best natural snowfall in the east, it's just too far away from metro areas to ever become a big time four season destination. If there wasn't a plethora of options closer to metro areas, then it would have a chance.

I worked at Snowshoe Mountain in WV for a season. Outside of the county in Maine, there probably isn't a single place on the east coast more in the middle of no where than Snowshoe. It was 45 miles to the nearest grocery store over mountain passes. Pittsburg and DC were the closer metros to there and those were 4.5 hour drives in good weather. That said, Snowshoe did 550K skier visits a season and had a ton of visitors during the summer. The only reason? no competition.

There's just too much competition for Jay to ever be a big time 4 season resort and I'm sure for the Jay regulars, that's good news.

I was up at Jay last Monday and had a number of random conversations with people on the lifts and tram. I was surprised to hear the number of folks from the Boston area who were property owners up there. Seems that they were up each week. I always figured Jay to be a ridiculous distance so I never considered it as a day-trip destination (the one time I went there for a day-trip was in a storm and it took more than 5 hours). But, I clocked my trip going home and basically made it in about 4 hours (Jay to Boston). That's basically just the same drive time to Stowe or Sugarbush. I guess my impression that Jay was too far stems from that long drive years ago, its proximity to the border (the radio stations are in French) and its location in the middle of nowhere. I have to give this mountain more than a second look.

It is truly only about a half hour further than Stowe and Sugarbush as well as only an hour further than then Okemo or Killington.

Perhaps they will be more in the game if they add additional intermediate terrain in the West Bowl. An attractive thing about Jay for year round is certainly the huge lake nearby.

Dude
I don't know how you drive but it is at least 2 hours to Jay from Stowe on a good day.
It is 45 min to an hour from Sugarbush to Stowe, and 1 1/2 from Killington to Sugarbush.
If you can do it in in 1 1/2 from Killington I'd love to see it.

I think you missed the point of the conversation. The poster above me was referring to drive time to Jay from Boston, which is four hours. It's three hours to the Killington area and three and a half to either Sugarbush or Stowe from Boston. The point being discussed was that Jay really isn't that much further from Boston than other ski areas are.

As for your claims of driving to Jay from Stowe taking 2 hours; what do you drive a moped? Horse and carriage? It NEVER took me longer than an hour and fifteen minutes to get to Jay when I lived in Stowe unless it was during a major snowstorm. I probably made the drive between Stowe and Jay a dozen times. It's only about 40 miles up route 100.

.

Did it in 80 minutes on Thursday, We were staying by the Matterhorn.

Anyhoo...we had breakfast at hotel Jay and I asked our waitress. She seemed visibly uncomfortable with the question but managed to say she has heard a lot of things but nothing is written in stone. Given her reaction, I didn't push any further.

Sounds about right. I lived on the north end of Stowe about five minutes up 100 from downtown.

Well Stowe is 6+ hours from NYC, and so is Jay.

As a family, we are condo dwellers apres...but the kids would miss having a pool

Never stayed at Jay, but I wonder if the town homes have jacuzzis

I think Bonaventure and Metro still run, as well as all other lower mountain lifts

They need to add a short mid mountain lift to the summit that's protected by the ridge coming from State side

In my experience, Jet rarely closes due to wind...and it serves up a good deal of terrain in the bowl in between that area and Bonaventure. Some hiking/poling is required at times...but you can get a lot off that one lift. Bonaventure closes often due to the last portion being very exposed.
