I bought one last season but returned it as you constantly have to play with the altimeter, and things aren't very intuitive.

In typical SAC fashion, no problems returning whatsoever.

There isnt a brand out there with an altimeter that you DONT have to futz around with......they are all based on barometric pressure and that pressure changes at altitude....hence the reason you have to "calibrate" them all the time....they are hardly perfectly accurate anyway...I use my suunto mostly to track vert.....

Yep, all correct statements. I originally purchased the Highgear, not a bad watch. But later, I went for a Suunto as well. I like having the ability of importing charts into my PC. Next step, got the Garmin eTrex Vista CX GPS which not only gives me vertical but records the tracks as well. What can I say, I'm a stat freak.

I got one of the Highgear Aerials from SAC on Monday and for $56.00 I thought it'd be worth a try. If it doesn't work well I'll or if I want to track things on a PC I'll get a Sunnto. I've been very impressed with Sunnto products, especially their dive computers. In addition to skiing I want to track accumulated vert gain for my road bike riding.

I was happy with the Highgear, worked well, good for telling me total veritical. The Suunto just took it a step further with graphs, breaking down the day to number of runs, and of course the ability to upload all this info to your PC.Here's a nice sample:
