The original plan was to stay near piazza rock sturday night, near the forest road at oberton stream sunday night, old gondi shack at the loaf monday night and then hunt for lines on the loaf tuesday. Unfortunately as we broke treeline on saddleback the remnants of ernesto screwed us. The sky opened with driving rain and wind gusts that made making it to the cairn a challenge. To make it all worse my GF was wearing shorts, so i decided i had to get us below treeline asap.
We headed west figuring we would eventually get to the ski area and luckily just below treeline we found some orange baizes. Eventually we popped out of the woods at the T-Bar summit and ended up taking shelter in the unlocked patrol shack. A few hours later the decision was made to head down the ski area.
Our long anticipated hiking trip was thrown off but it ended up working out okay as everybody was safe, i didnt lose my hiking partner and we ended up getting a few days in the pemi. Here are a few pics I took on the hike down Saddleback. Sorry for the low quality, forgot my camera and the pics were taken with a disposable.
Classic sign on the wall of the patrol shack.
There was random pipe all over the hill. This was taken at the summit.
Top of a new trail.
Bottom of the same new trail.
Tree shot. There were tasty looking trees everywhere. Nothing too steep, but some were tight.
Some of the easier trees.
A chair-less double.
Found the chairs.
As far as terrain it looked like a great place to ski but I was really dissapointed in the way we were treated. We went into the Saddleback lodge to get some water and we were treated like criminals. Also catching a thumb was impossible. I've thumbed throughout the whites and the greens and a pack on you back is usually a free pass. After a plethora of cars passed us an elderly couple from delaware, of all places, gave us a lift.
