On Tuesday nites I’m a chaperone for my 12-year-olds ski club. We go to West Mt. Like everywhere else in the East they have struggled because of the weather. They have about half of their trails open and 2 chair lifts (doubles), but they also have their full roster of buses full of kids, so last night had long lift lines.

Skiing single and being conscientious I always try to double up in the lift line, preferably with an adult. I axed this one guy if he was single and he replied, “Yes, and that’s the way I want it.” I guess the expression on my face then led him to add, “Nothing personal, I just have an important phone call to make on the way up.”

Whether he had to make a call or just wanted privacy, it’s fine with me, but in all my years of skiing this is the first time anyone has told me that they where single, but refused to double up.

Anyone have a similar experience?

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd be pretty wierded out if you asked me if I was single.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

On the Z lift at Hunter west, which is best ridden single, a guy ran up and jumped on the chair with me well after it had left the loading zone. I couldn't even come up with a comment to him as I thought he was nuts. But given the opportunity I would have told him ...stay away. But in you're case it seems a little strange for this to happen.

Sounds pretty weak, especially if it was busy. If his phone call was that important perhaps he should step off to the side...

Hell, Im all for maxing capacity on busy days, but it is nice sometimes to just chill on a lift by yourself. Im a bigger guy (6'3 200, and I snowboard) so the extra space is nice.

I hear ya with liking the extra space (6'4" ~235), sometimes you need to suck it up though. ;)

Well, maybe I can convince the wife to head up there next weekend. If so I'll see you up there.

I'm so tired of ^&$#%5 cell phones! They turn people into oblivious morons. You should jumped on the chair and sang a really bad 80's song at the top of your lungs.

p.s. i have issues because i got hit on my bicycle a couple of years ago by a lady chatting on her phone. I really feel this is nearly as dangerous as drinking and driving, yet it's a big joke.

Not really related to the topic, but I recently saw a guy talking on his cell phone while skiing. It was a green trail, he was in his 50s and talking business as he worked his way down the trail.

My friends were skiing Hunter on Sat. and they were waiting to load the beginner Quad at Hunter One. A couple moved up to the green line and my two friends moved up next to them. The girl looked over at my friends, then turned to her boyfriend and said (really loudly) "Are THEY riding up with US???" My friend looked right at the girl and said "I'm standing right here, I can hear you, and yes, we are riding up with you, it's a QUAD." The girl seemed really annoyed that she had to share the quad with other people.

I can understand some beginners being afraid of having 4 people on the lift at the same time but this apparently wasn't the case as the girl had no difficulty getting on or off the lift. I think she just wanted some "alone" time with her boyfriend. I thought the whole story was pretty funny.

Lemme guess, was this at Bretton Woods on a Wednesday a couple weeks ago? I saw the same thing there. What's the point of skiing. Go in the lodge or into your car. Distracted skier is probably as dangerous than distracted driver.

I find that the week night school outings at Ski Sundown drive me crazy. There could be a line 20 people deep and these kids fuss over who is going to ride with who as empty chairs go up the mtn.I also love it when I move to one side of the loading area so that others can join me and they all stair off in the distance and pretend not to see me. Do I smell, can they sense that I am soon to be 30 years old and therefor not cool?
