There used to be a sign partway up the liftline at Sugarloaf that said if you were at Sunday River this would be the summit. Allways has been a rivalry between the two. I think Sugarloafers started calling the river someday bigger.

...and at the time, it was to some degree appropriate name...I recall hearing it prior to the Aurora expansion, and I wouldn't be surprised if it predated White Cap, as well (i.e. the resort has at least doubled the amount of skiing since then). For a few years, it seemed like there was a major terrain expansion every two or three years, although I think that trend has probably stopped due to financial considerations.

Re: the sign, I've noted this in another thread...but I shivered past that thing more than once and thought, "I wish I was at the top here now," although that became much less of an issue with the quad. I heard that it ended up in Les's office after he bought the Loaf, but I have no idea where it is now.

Also have heard Attitrash for Attitash, obviously...

Though I enjoy the Bear Peak side.

Wow, most of the nicknames are pretty demeaning, save for a few. This is my first season skiing here and I like almost every place I've been.
I am not trying to start anything, but is everyone that jaded? I grew up in the Chicago metro area and 1000' was big hill for us flatlanders.
Yea, I know, I'm the new guy on the board/block/slope and my eyes havent been opened fully yet, but I really enjoyed Okemo, Stratton, Sunday River, and I'm heading to Attitash on Friday.
I didn't like Loon as much as the others, but that's because it was REALLY crowded and icy. I need to go mid week sometime for a fair view I think.
What places would you say I would HAVE to hit, doing day trips ~3 hours max each way.

Sheik,
What kind of skier are you? what skill level, do you like glades, bumps, cruisers...stuff like that. different mountains have different flavors to them.

honestly a lot of the nicknames are in good fun. I always called whiteface iceface. However I love skiing thier. and there are also some rivalries between mountains. Killington/okemo, sugarloaf/the river....and im sure some more i dont really know about

I think the alltime great is Crusty Butt. Especially on the closing day of 97.
Does anyone know what the attraction was on closing day back then?

The places you've been to are nice especially for flatlanders, but once you hit these other places you'll see the difference.
You may want to try Cannon, Burke and Wildcat. Sugarbush and Mad River Glen may be out of the 3 hour range. Longer drive, there's Whiteface and Sugarloaf. No personal experience but Stowe and Pico are on our list for this year. Also a lot of people love Jay. You made a good decision moving to New England. So many resorts so little time!

I guess I'd qualify as an advanced beginner/intermediate. I know I can do the blue runs at Stratton, but they actually seemed somewhat tame, and after reading what you all have wrote it makes sense.
About 20 years ago I was able to get out to Alta and ski every day for 2 weeks, and took 3 lessons to start the trip. I think I was an advanced inter/advanced at that point, going down chutes, skiing waist deep powder in trees, but it's 20 years later and my body's 20 years older....
I know I would like glades, not rapid turning glades to start, but I love the solitude of skiing alone (not alone, but not with 300 of my closest friends on a trail either), and I love the long cruisers blue or green.
Anyway, sorry to seem so pissy, I am just really grateful to have such a diversity of places so close. I guess eventually I will become jaded to some, it's inevitable, I'm a Cubs fan.

Sugarbush is a little over 3 hours from Dedham and you'll love the solitude midweek. There are a few inexpensive lodging options in the MRV that can help you turn a day trip into an overnight and get more time on the slopes.

I believe the Copper lift is called the American Eagle (could be wrong though)
