Resort or Ski Area: Ski Sundown, New Hartford, CT
Conditions: Firm moguls, fresh manmade, hard pack, LGR; Clear, calm cold - in the teens.
Trip Report: I skied the bumps on Nor'easter at Ski Sundown last Wednesday with 2knees. I was sure that after Friday's rain they would mow them all down. Saturday's conditions report had no mention of moguls (perhaps that section of Nor'easter was closed) but Sunday's online report as well as the skiphone touted the bumps. Fellow AlpineZoner, Catul who skied there during the day Emailed me that there were indeed bumps on Nor'easter. In fact, he said, they looked like they weren't touched by a groomer over the weekend. The decision was made. Tonight would be endless laps on the bumps of Nor'easter.
The only lift running was the "B" Triple, but no matter as the place was empty. No more than a 2 or 3 chair wait and most were ski-on. As I made my way over the upper part of Nor'easter, I saw that pleasing "MOGULS" sign, and behind it, illuminated by the lights were some HUGE bumps. As I got to the top of the mogul run, I was amazed at how big the bumps were. Apparently they resurfaced over the weekend as many of the trees down the bump run were encrusted with blown manmade. Off I went.
The bumps were firm as expected given the rain on Friday and cold weather, but the top dressing snow filled in the run nicely and provided an edgeable surface to ski on. The manmade on top really made a difference and the bumps were SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than they were last Wednesday. Hard to believe that Connecticut has a bump run this good right now. Again, I really applaud the mountain for setting up this run. It's great to have a quality run to practice bumps on within a 25 minute drive from home!
Not much to report for the rest of the moutain, as I only did laps on Nor'easter; probably on the order of 17 or 18 runs. The upper part of Nor'easter was a mix of LGR, hard pack and some powdery manmade, as was the runout (Exhibition) back to the lifts. The mountain did a fine job recovering from Friday's rain.
A really fun night. Normally, for me, I would get a bit bored skiing solo, at night, on a 625' vert mountain, but the moguls made for great fun and challenge. I even strategically planned my runs so my final boarding of the lift was at 9:59 pm. Starting to get the hang of bumps more and tried to raise my hips, stand taller, and absorb and extend. Finally felt how proper A&E does indeed control your speed. Getting there...
