Skiing the bush for my first time ever. One Question.. Lincoln Peak or Mt.Ellen? Which is less crowded? which has better Black/Blue crusiers?

You're going on the weekend... you can slide brook it and check out both mountains.

LP is probably where you want to be for groomed cruisers though.

I disagree. Lincoln Peak may be one of the worst 2k vert mountains in New England for groomed intermediate cruising. LP is more crowded than ME from what I gather as well. I think the OP would be best served by ME but that is a good point regarding the Slidebrook if weather is not a factor.

For really nice blue cruisers, Ellen. 2600' cruising run if you take Upper Rim Run - Elbow - Cruiser - Straight Shot (straight shot is pretty flat, but the rest are good!). Also good cruising on Lower Rim Run, Which Way (skiers' right), and North Star. Mt. Ellen will be less crowded, and will also disperse the crowd better.

For black cruisers, you'd want to be at Lincoln Peak. Organgrinder will probably be groomed, and Ripcord was just winched this week, so will probably be pretty flat.

OK... I've never been, so I'll take your word for it... The impression I got from here was that ME was bump land... Guess I shouldn't open my mouth on mountains I haven't skied...

Gotta get there this year though.

If you're an early riser make first chair at Lincoln Peak, ski for a few hours then take the slidebook over to ME for lunch and finish up there.

BushMogulMaster has it dead on. I was there last year in Feb and loved cruising on those trails he described. Spent one day at Lincoln and could not wait to get back to Mt. Ellen. I also like the laid back casual lodge at Mt Ellen.

It is, but that doesn't mean we don't have good cruisers as well. Actually, the fact that we groom less acreage allows us to focus better on the terrain that we DO groom, so we tend to put out a pretty high quality product on our cruisers at Ellen (not saying they don't on the other side... just speaking about Mt. Ellen).

If you want to save some cash, you can just get a Mt. Ellen ticket! As long as Northridge is running then I would for one day just ski Ellen. It has the best of all worlds! with no lines.:snow:

Trying to keep the place to yourself? No need to be greedy. The place seems empty even when there are a couple thousand people skiing.

Although, in reality, Mt. Ellen is usually 1-2 degrees colder than Lincoln Peak. Great for snowmaking, actually. Windy? Yeah... sometimes. Dark? Well... no darker than the other mountains up here. And let's keep it straight: 39 trails.

I, for one, am happy to share Mt. Ellen with other skiers. Mountain-wise, Ellen can handle a lot more skiers than it usually sees. However, base facilities are a different story. I adore the quaint base lodge, but it's capacity is definitely limited, and it fills up quick on the holiday weekends.

Glad Lincoln was shaping up. However... I was at Ellen yesterday, and it's in great shape. Groomers are smooth and soft, and the bumps are nice. Hard/scratchy underneath the new snow on the natural stuff, but real nice soft snow on top. Snowmaking at Ellen was on North Star and base area. Someone told me yesterday that Elbow was skiing the nicest they had ever skied it.
