We are looking to have a dog once we are settled in. One of things I would love to do is have the dog out for earned turn skiing after a two or three years or so of training and once I am confident the dog is properly trained. I have seen lots of responsible dog owners bring their four legged friends up the mountain on earned turn trips. I would avoid popular destinations such as the Mount Washington area and probably tend to focus on earned turns at closed ski areas. I think a responsible and careful owner with a well trained dog could pursue such adventures without much risk.

That was a big German Shepherd...I don't think he was going to let me get any closer to begin with. He was quite a physical presence.

I just had a Hunter flashback. Karl Plattner use to have a big German Shepard who use to ride the lift once in a while and run down after him. The dogs name was Lobo. Do you remember him Jim, it was a long time ago?

Damn, Greg, it doesn't take long to find the dicks over here. I'm beginning to question your invitation to join in.

Don't look to Greg for help. He's the biggest one here...

I don't need any help dealing with nickle 'n dime egos like you, just making a comment Greg will get, and you never will. Regardless, hope you have a great 4th.

L2 - not sure who you are. Anyway, I think you just need to spend some time here to get a feel for Marc's personality and sarcasm. He's harmless.

I would love to bring my dog skiing. I bring him cross country skiing a couple times a week. He having a lazy master will never experience downhill skiing cause I am not walking up a hill.
I would love to bring him on the gondola but it just would not work. To many people and he would be a nuisance. Now if they had a bring your dog skiing day that would be something I would be in on.

I do...and of course I remember Casper, David Slutsky's white Samoyed. I think there have been a few Caspers, I think we're on #3.

Lhotse (my Lab) LOVES skiing with my wife and I. We only bring her to the mountain after hours for some night time earned runs, or in the BC. She's been to Tuckerman Ravine a few times, followed me up and over the headwall, then again back down, up and down the Teardrop countless times, and to many other undisclosed locations :) She keeps up fine, and has only got in the way once (back in 2005 on Pico after they closed for the season), and has learned to stay away since then. She's always having a blast, and most important, I keep her well hydrated.

Pics are of Pico,

Hurry up dad, I want to chase you down FIS (at the bush)-yes, there is snow here, but only on upper FIS)

anyway, so my take is: (as you probably guessed) dogs in the BC only (less "traffic"), and well trained at that. No one likes an out of control dog, so train them well, and all will end well. Period.

Dave-

Awesome dog, man! And great advice, too. Though, honestly, in a crowded resort I'd be more concerned for the safety of my dogs than them getting in the way of someone and causing them to crash. Maybe I'm biased...

Thanks for the comments guys, days like today I feel bad for leaving her home to hang out by herself while i'm in the office... but she is just like her owners, she lives for the outdoors!

Fine pooch, dave.

I'm not a big fan of dogs at resorts, mostly for the dog's safety. I do have some fond memories of some of the dogs at Magic, particularly the Bernese, Tucker and Tanner. It was cool to watch them charging down the slope after their Mom.

Also Rusty and Nanook, despite their smaller presence.

A particularly memorable moment for me was reaching Hermit lake one afternoon in March of '89 and seeing a Freehealer being chased down Hillman;s by two Newfies.
