hey guys,

we went ski shopping or should i say window shopping(for the moment). the guy recommended atomic izor 7:5 skis.

i am a beginner and hubby is intemediate(just getting back into skiing after 20 years off). we want decent skis that will allow us to grow with us as our(especially me) confidence/skill increases. the shop was closing and we needed to get home so we never got into boots. he said we would start with the atomic boots but really whatever we were most comfortable in is best(already stated by someone on AZ).

so any thoughts on this choice, others, and boots?

we would much rather buy than waste the money on rentals and want to take advantage of the end of season sales.

thanks!

Key is start with boots. Make sure they fit perfectly, obviously go with a good boot fitter. Don't get talked into any specific boot brand, goes with what fits your foot type best.

Skis are important, but at your level any decent low-intermediate ski will probably do.

I just bought a pair of izor 5:3 skis as my first pair. I've skied on them twice and so far I love them. My wife, who is experienced but this is her first season skiing in about 10 years, bought atomic Balanze skis, which are the female version of the izor's and she loves those.

I had a hard time figuring out what torsion level I should be skiing on. The #s 7:5 refer to the stiffness of the tip and tail respectively. The izor's range from 3:1 for beginners to 9:7 for advanced but there are other things to factor in too like weight, aggressiveness, and speed you feel comfortable with. Maybe I could ski a bit faster and get grip on steeper terrain with the 7:5s, but my wife doesn't like to go too fast and I have a 3 year old with whom I will be skiing next year and I wanted something I could have fun on when going slowly too.

Like I said, this is my first year, so I am no expert on any aspect of the sport or gear, but I can tell you that on my first run on these izor's I was carving. I had been trying for a while to get into a carving groove on rental skis that were dull, not waxed, and not nearly as shapely as the izors. Now, I am carving all over the place and skiing a lot faster than I was on the rentals.

I posted a thread about my choice here last week and someone who is a ski instructor praised my decision to buy a ski that is appropriate for my level. Good luck with your decision.

Hi,
Hey how about this weather....motha Nature is giving us a little more winter, Outstanding!
The Izor 7&#*$ has been well received....and sound like a good ski to re-unite with whatever skills you had/have.
If needed, footbeds will help your bootfit & skiing 99.9%
*"Let's Start with brand-X(Atomic..etc).." sounds like encourageable language to me..
Remember a 25.0 and 25.5 is the SAME alpine-boot shell!..just different bootboards or liners in some cases...Jeff can help you with the actual facts...but for pretty much all boots...size-wise, a 25 Atomic shell will = a 25 Nordica shell..so size is pretty much independent of brand-name!! What a different brand-name DOES buy you is essentially the possibility of a difference in Everything else about the boot's FIT.

Do some shell-fitting for size, get a very snug heel pocket as well as overall...fit, without a lot of tightness over your instep, and a boot whose cuff is at a comfortable forward lean for you...with the sidecuts in skis these days, there are some boot models that have some pretty extreme forward lean in them...if they lean too much for your skeletal/muscular makeup...they'll play havoc with your balance....which = your comfort level.

I'm sure you could find a better definition for carving in many other places on the web than from a newbie like me, but here goes - making turns with your skis on edge with little or no sliding downhill as you turn. I find that it requires less frequent turning and less effort than sliding turns and is more fun and has opened up new terrain for me. I think Atomic markets the Izor's as being particularly good for carving. I think every major ski maker has skis that are supposed to be great for carving.

Hey!!! Is this my wife posting here? She's a novice, and I'm an intermediate who just got back in after a 20 year hiatus.

We both have Atomics, but the older C- series. She's on the C3s and I have C9s. We're both looking to upgrade in the near future.
