While the views from Mansfield (Stowe) are nice as are the views from Whiteface they pale in comparison to Wildcat and Cannon

Agree completely. Views from Wildcat are amazing. Views from Bretton Woods are better than Stowe, IMO and I've skied both quite a bit. I'd throw in the views from Sunapee and Gunstock as being very worthy as well with the vistas of the lakes.

How much of "best grooming" is skill-based and how much is equipment based? It seems to me that, with modern equipment, grooming shouldn't be all that different from one area to another.

There's an art to grooming. You can "over groom", which will breakdown the snow into a frozen granular type consistency over time. We had a member here who was a long time groomer and he explained it well.

Not just overgrooming but also knowing when the weather is best for grooming. Grooming in between a warmup/freeze is a horrible idea.

Killington does have the best grooming.

Lets add this to the mix-- Liftopia is getting into polling. See what they have to say.

My one question is, where exactly is Killington's "town" to explore?

I always thought the "town" of Killington was basically where Rt. 100 splits off from Rt. 4 and heads north (i.e., the base of the access road). It's been a while since I've been through that way, but I do recall there being a tiny village there.

Close. Go further east on Route 4--down the hill.

That is correct & they have plans for that area.

edit: Bills Country Store was bought by the towns Chamber of Commerce 2 years ago & is presently their headquarters.

When I was in Ootah a liftie was telling me they will only groom every other day to preserve the integrity of the snow. The more you run a groomer over a surface the more friction = heat = loss of snow, or something along those lines. Makes sense to me.

For NH

New Hampshire
1. Loon Mountain
2. Wildcat Mountain
3. Cannon Mountain
4. Mount Sunapee
5. Bretton Woods
6. Gunstock Mountain
7. Waterville Valley
8. Pats Peak
9. Attitash
10. Cranmore

I'm glad Loon is at the top ... cause I never go there. Ragged not even in the top ten? That's too bad. I would think they're at least as good as Waterville ... and BETTER that Gunstock come on!

...
While I don't necessarily agree with the order, that's not a bad list. The fact that Ragged is not on the list, show just how "under the radar" Ragged is. Perhaps now that they have 2 HS-detachables, people will notice them more!

I dunno, I've been at Ragged on holiday weekends, and even regular weekends after a heavy snow. "Under the radar" is not a term I would use to describe it.

I drive through here at least 4 times a year to visit the Longtrail Brewery, and I repeat....where is the town???
