Pretty good group, but just wait until you see a post from The poster (Sunday River). One of us will bring it over here if it does not get posted directly here. I'm confident they will be open this week. Power of positive thinking. BTW.... Ga2ski is a moderator over there, so we do have some reliable sources.

There are few people on that board that know what they are talking about It is like any message board you need to figure out who info is realiable. That being said, I don't even think ST knows when they are opening yet. The best thing you can do is monitor the SRMB, sundayriver.com, and here. DJAK posts here and is the communications director for Sunday River. He will definitely let everyone know when the lifts will turn.

cool, thanks guys.

i still have faith. here in pa it was 28 at 6am and i still needed the ice scraper to get to work. lets hope this warmup is not as severe as originally expected and somewhere will be open by the 10th.

Got this e-mail today from Stratton:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, tune your skis and snowboards because it's starting to feel a lot like winter here at Stratton Mountain. We fired up the snowguns for the first time last Thursday night, laying down a base on "The Bears": Black Bear, Polar Bear and Grizzly Bear. From there we move on to Snow Bowl, with the team poised to make snow at every opportunity as we gear up for Opening Day 2007.

Meanwhile, the snow is falling from every direction with those tower guns blasting and pine trees bowing beneath Mother Nature's own first storm. We've set our sights on opening November 22. Mark your calendars and get ready!"

That picture of snowshoe is pretty impressive.
Anybody ever been there. What's it like. I have a friend who lives outside of DC that has hit up some MD resorts but wasn't too happy. Maybe this would suite him better.

"The snowmaking is over for now - but not before our veteran snowmakers were able to get in 42 straight hours of snowmaking Thursday evening through Saturday. With 20' piles of snow in some places, it's looking good for opening day, November 22. "

Interesting that they would blow this much with so long to wait....maybe it is indicative of the weather pattern.

Snowshoe, along with Timberline and Canaan Valley, is located up high in the West Virginia Mountains. Snowshoe has a base of above 3000, and a summit around 4800. They average around 180 inches of snow per year. I've never been there, the 5 hour drive each way being the main reason, but from what I've seen it's a great family mountain with a "pod" of legit black terrain that has 1500 feet of vert. If my memory serves me, Powderhound21 skis there alot and would be able to give a better idea of what it's like there.

The only current MD resort is Wisp, located near deep creek lake in Garrett Country Maryland. It's a pretty small hill (~600) foot vertical, but it does get a decent amount of snow for the Mid-A (100 inch average).

Where outside of DC?

According to mapquest, it's 4 hours and 56 minutes from my house on the Northeastern side of the Beltway. Traveling times on the beltway may vary though due to, but not limited to the following: Too many people, rubbernecking, serious accident, minor accident, change in wind direction, 5 degree temperature change, presidential motorcade, alien invasion, or a Kennedy out on the roads.

I know. I once got stuck on the beltway for like hours. I was convinced that there was a serious terrible accident. I was wrong. Apparently there was a deer on the road.

Ah, yes. A season pass holder to the shoe.

What would you like to know?

As far as their snowmaking goes, they can be very agressive at it. This past round, I dont think they made as much as they could have. As far as outrageously early openings, not snowshoe territory. But when the "time" (as in people would actually consider coming- Nov) comes, they will kill anything south of hunter.

Slopes are for the most part a good blend of green, blue, and black. A good portion of the mtn is nice blue terrain. Families? Not the kind of place. The mountain is, well, I wouldnt say huge- more like relatively large for east standards. Given that, It wouldnt go well for keeping up with others. I will suggest Wintergreen for that, or Winterplace. Also, snowshoe can have some harsh weather. Wind is almost always present, and when you take in the coldest air in the Mid- Atlantic, IT gets chilly. I would forsee some complaining. If you go in the spring, say early March, it might go over better.

3 parks, and a pipe. Spruce glades would be the most difficult. Ive seen wall rides, triple kinks, and 60' tables. Then theres the rail garden, which has 10-15 intermideate rails and boxes- some ride-on, some jump-on. The Mountaineer park at Silver Creek is my favorite. It has some really nice boxes, the pipe, picnic tables, and had a nice line of 20' tables last year.

Snowfall- 180"
I wouldnt second guess the estimate, either. A good 40-60% of it comes from lake effect and orographic lift ("upslope"). So alot of the time it will be the nice dry powder. Bumps are pretty good from my judgement (Im a boarder, not interested in them). Choker, Knot Bumper glades, and particuarly Shays get some decent bumps.

I just moved to Worcester from Atlanta Ga.

I ran the youth group there and we took the youth to Snowshoe every year in Feb. Thats the first mountain I have ever skied. Followed by Park City as my second.

I loved Snowshoe, I thougt it was great for families. My two daughtesr (8 and 10) spend a week there over new years last year. The teachers are great and the trails were good for them.

I never even thought I would be able to drive there from here. I am going to look at mapquest and see how far it is.

So, can someone compare Killington and Mt. Snow to Snowshoe for me?
