I heard a story once that recently, they got the hudson so clean that a once thought extinct species of microbe started making a comeback. Everyone thought it was great till they realized this microbe eats docks.

I just heard this somewhere

I went to high school in the last town on the Hudson where it was still safe to swim in and boat on, and some of the camps along the river even used it for drinking water (with treatment). We used to have a lot of fun on the Hudson. There used to be a huge paper mill at the other end of my hometown, and 2 more paper mills and a 2 huge GE chemical plants 8 miles downstream in Glens Falls, so that was always the point where recreation ended on the river.

They're also talking about making a beach on the Charles River basin in downtown Boston. It's been cleaned up a lot in the past 10-15 years, but I would still be pretty wary of swimming in it. Some locals may remember former governor Bill Weld taking a dive into the Charles (in his suit, no less) a few years ago to publicize the cleanup.......

I will never swim in the Charles or at any beach on the North Shore south of Manchester. I can't believe that people actually go in the water in Revere, Lynn and Salem....

Revere Beach was a nice place when I visited it. Really surprised me. I did not swim now mind you  But a nice place nonetheless and off the T.

My oldest son went swimming in the Hudson yesterday, and is going again today when school gets out. We are 50 miles north of NYC but it is still saltwater. IMHO we have the best "beach" on the Hudson ;)
