I just know if it's me and Wildcat or Cannon get a foot of snow and SR, SL or SB gets skunked, I'd opt for Wildcat or Cannon given their reasonable commute from your location.

How often did you daytrip Wildacat or Cannon when you lived in Portland? Regardless, I get you point and it makes sense. And don't get me wrong, I liked Wildcat a lot. However, quite honestly I am lazy and cheap, and even given the scenario you describe I would probably end up skiing groomers at SR 1:15 from my house for free.

Cannon I did not. I'm cheap too and the only weekend deal they have is Superbowl Sunday.

Wildcat I took advantage of Sunday deals at least a couple of times a season. I prefer Wildcat to Sunday River, but the commute to the River was easier, so that's where I got a pass.

Makes sense. Ultimately I love all ski areas and can have fun anywhere. I even had fun ripping the 240 feet of vert at Lost Valley a couple times last season! That said, I feel lucky to live where I do and to have several great ski areas in relatively close proximity. That said, I don't feel much of a need to travel, and don't require the variety that many people do. I am intrigued by many Vermont resorts, but they are simply too far to day trip, and I don't have the time or money for a vaction.

I'd be all over that if I didn't have some vouchers in VT I still need to use up before the lifts stop spinning. Though I might look into it for the weekend of the 17th if I think VT areas will make it to May 1st weekend.

ME is 100% a numbers game, as it's difficult for most to get to.

NH? Maybe it's the opposite in that it's a touch easier for the Beantown crowd to get to many NH options, but that's just speculation on my part.

I live near Nashua NH and I can get to at least 7-8 ski areas in NH within 2 hours...but no ski areas in VT.

Prior to this season it was Maine #1, then NH, then VT. I "grew up" skiing Sugarloaf as my friends have a place near the mtn. This yr I've explored VT more and have done most of my days in VT. This yr I should get in approx 25 days with 70% VT, 15% each for NH/ME.

I'm not, NH has some good ski areas and a lot of them concentrated in the same region. Not as big as VT or ME areas, but there is plenty of choice.

ME has 3 ski areas that are considered big mountains. With 2 of them being a half day drive from Boston NH has better excess from Boston. VT draws from both NY/NJ and the Boston region. Also I do not agree that ME offers better skiing than NH. SL on a good day is great but I have been there on some pretty crappy days. The long drive with the chance of wind blow hell with half the mountain closed is not my idea of much better skiing. Contrary to popular belief bigger is not always better when it comes to skiing. I used to do most of my skiing at SR but was turned off with less than satisfactory trail upkeep in the late 90's.

I loffed when I read the above! I don't think we'll read this description in a ski resort brochure anytime soon.

I live and ski mostly in NY. Most of my out of state skiing has been in VT. I did ski Maine, Sugarloaf, and NH, Wildcat, the last two Springs. Canon and Saddleback are high on my to do list.

When I lived on CT as a kid my family skied either at Southington or Powder Ridge with a random trip to MA or VT.

After I turned 30 or so I pretty much stayed away from skiing in CT because it bored me to tears. With the amount of trouble driving to Mohawk or Sundown it just seemed easier to go MA or VT. Skied a lot at Jiminy or Haystack.

Now that I live in NH I find I'm surrounded by great places to ski and might only make it out of state to VT one or twice a season.

Someday I will get to Maine to ski, but it's just SO far.

It's much more than just "a little more" for someone from NJ or NYC on a roundtrip to get to a Sugarloaf, than to a Whiteface or a Jay Peak.
