My uncle had his 08 Line Prophet's stolen at Cranmore this afternoon. We went and ate lunch for about 20 minutes came back and they were gone! Be carefull with your skis even at the small family area's.

To quote Yogi Berra "it's like deja vu all over again" - locks, even cheapo cable locks are more often than not plenty of a deterrant to cause some a$$hole to pass right over your and onto an unlocked pair

last time I was at K, I was locking my skis up using my el cheapo cable lock, right next to their ski valet guy. He made a comment to me that the lock was a P.O.S. and could easily be defeated. I agreed with him, but pointed out a pair of sticks, worth several hundred more than mine, that were just leaning up against the wall. I said to him, why should someone break my lock, when those skis are worth much more...he conceded with me

Well not to sound doumb but I am glad this was posted. I have never locked up my skis and never really knew to as well. I have even gone to Killington but if I recall correctly I dont think I ever took my skis off either. I am sorry to hear of the stolen skis but because of this post I will go out and get a lock of some kind.

If you only knew the number of threads like this one that reoccur, you'd have done it sooner. :-D

Do it and use it. I use a retractable, very small cable lock that fits in my pocket, about the size of a tic-tac box. I use it whenever I'm at a base lodge and always anytime after noon. Making it a little bit difficult is sufficient, with so many boards to chose from. I've been doing this for 30 years and have lost count the number of stolen ski reports I have witnessed the same time mine were outside locked up. If I'm parked close enough to the lodge, I ski to the lot and put them right in the car at the end of the day.

People gotta think these things through. It's all about risk mitigation.
Clearly if it wasn't a regular problem resorts wouldn't have ski checks. They can call it "valet" but it's not about convenience (since ski valet is no more convenient, perhaps less so waiting in line) it's about theft.

Just wondering...how many people have heard of problems with "used" skis being stolen?

I'm curious because while I lock my new skis consistently I normally don't worry about my spouse or kids' skis because they have some miles on them.

I have. It usually an opportunistic, snatch and grab type. There are a few different motives. There are organized efforts, that go shopping. But the ones I worry most about are the teens or bus trippers that just grab and throw it in the undercarriage of the bus, then feign ignorance if the skis are discovered. Nearly untraceable.

Who's to say what constitutes "used". Mine look like hell after one season. My daughter's skis look pristine after 5 years.

With regards to rentals in my groups, I honestly don't worry about rentals being stolen.

With regards to teeny tiny kids skis, I don't worry about them.

I too use one of those el cheapo retractables , about the size BILL describes . I'm probably anal about it but i always lock em up( when getting my ticket , or lunch or end of the day debooting),--- even at mom and pop hills .

It's just enough of a PITA for a would be thief , they'll move on to easier pickings

Keeping the honest people honest is how I refer to it.

Hey so where can I get one of those famous "el cheepo" retractable cable locks?? Or is there a brand name I can look up or should I just google ski locks??

I usually ski with at least one person so I aways switch a ski with them when I leave them at lunch. When you've got a row of skis, you don't steal the pair that obviously don't match.

Sorry to hear about your Uncle Darwin. :-(

I got mine in a ski shop somewhere in the north east. The only thing it says on it, which appears to be a brand name, is "Ski - Lift"
Mine is solid black, with a combination dial, but here are some similar :

on ebay

http://www.amazon.com/Snowjam-Compact-Ski-Lock/dp/B000M178WA

http://www.shopwiki.com/search/Snowboard%2FSki_Retractable_Cable_Lock?loose=t

they all do the same thing. Google "ski lock retractable"

Your local ski shop should have them. They usually go for about $15-$20. Cheap insurance IMHO. I actually scored one at Marshall's for about $10-$12 after Christmas.
