Strange lack of service at Stratton

I was at Stratton the past 2 days, not skiing but watching and videotaping the B mogul comp there. Yesterday I was on call at work and brought (and checked) my laptop in case I got called (thankfully I didn't).

Now I know this is a dorky complaint (hell I am a dork right?) But here goes anyway, I asked at the main base lodge if they had wi-fi. Answer? No.

They apparently have it at one restaurant in the village, where you have to pay for it.

This is Stratton, after all. Supposedly one of the most upscale resorts in the east, if not the United States. Killington has free wi-fi at their base lodge.

I was just puzzled at this strange contradiction.

Comp was fun BTW, although a bit chilly yesterday. Iceman ended up with a 10th on Sat and 4th yesterday. Its all good, though. All the competitors are cheering each other on. Thats the bottom line, they're all having fun.

That is a bit strange. I know Mt. Snow offers it at their main base lodge for nothing. You'd be surprised how many people you'll see in there on laptops. Makes good business sense IMHO...if one of the parents doesn't ski...or can't ski, they can at least come up with the family; instead of everyone staying home.

I had a few strange things happen to me at Stratton yesterday. The first when the guy on AmEx lift, on the far right decided to lift the bar with no announcement, hitting me square in the helmet. This prompted the guy sitting next to me to start reaming the guy out. "You've got to say 'bar up'. You almost took his nose off."

Guy to the right looks at me all sarcastically and says, slowly, "Bar Up..."

This would have elicited a response from me if the guy to my right hadn't already started his own heated exchange on the matter.

Weird moment 2: I go in to warm up mid-mountain around 10 am, and I'm taking my skis off next to a whole bunch that are laid against the foundation, not racked. Well, this kid, maybe 8, runs into them, knocking the whole lot of them to the ground. He instantly turns at me, while I'm still removing my skis, points at me in a panic, and screams, "He did it." Then he runs away, with people looking at me.

I've got another free pass to burn there, but this was my third time at Stratton and for the third time in a row, I came away wildly unimpressed.

haha, seems like you had one of those days then! If you take yourself too seriously then that might have p'ed you off!

One of my pet gripes is why is it called bloddy Wi-fi? What does the -fi dtand for? Can't they just call it wireless? Petty ain't it?

I had one of those days today as well, got 30 minutes into my 2 hour journey to the hill only to realize I'd left my jacket at home, took me 1 hr 20 min to fight my through rush hour traffic to get it and get back to where I was when I realised it wasn't in the car. Very rarely have I been so pissed!

Oh yeah, what I meant to say was - I was at Stratton last weekend for 5 days and loved every minute. However I'm maybe used to slightly less customer service (T-Bars, single chair lifts, very few markings on the mountain and Cat.5 Avvy warnings posted) that I'm maybe easier to please?

Just be grateful you're out there skiing/boarding and not stuck at a desk!

I know the kid is a brat for doing this, and if he does this at 8, watch out world as he grows up... but honestly this has me laughing out loud! Thanks for the nice break in my afternoon.

I think it is a no-brainer to have wireless at the base lodge for the non-skiing parents. It probably should be mentioned that there is wireless somewhere on the webpage as well. My Mom used to drive me and my friends all over the place and grade papers in the base lodge, so I can imagine in the computer age there are a lot of moms doing the same thing for their kids but with computers now.

But at Stratton, their aim is to tip you over and shake all the money from your pockets, no? <begin extreme sarcasm> Shouldn't you be shopping in the fine stores, drinking at the bars and eating at the fine dining establishments? What a perfectly good waste of a seat to a non-paying customer. Oh, excuse me Jeeves, would you mind standing in the hallway while you wait for your passenger? Sorry, this seat is for paying customers. Oh, and by the way, no bag lunches, please. <end extreme sarcasm/>

None of that surprises me.

Agreed. The demographics they seek to attract to their resort, seem to think this is normal behavior.

Spent the day at Stratton last Tue. and today and had a great time both days. They get a horrible rep. on here, and i love the place.

Maybe they are setting up a 'pay for' Wi-Fi service in the main lodge. Though it does not seem like it would be a big deal to set up a free service. I understand that it is great for people who don't ski and are waiting for their kids. Maybe the management doesn't want people 'hanging around' surfing the web?

Most of the time, people DON'T have wireless simply becouse, it gets used very little, and offers pretty much 0 feedback in a persons choice to go there or not.

I was at Stratton on Saturday 1/24, this was my first time back in 4 years. I had some great days here a couple of years ago but after spending the last 4 years primarily at Sugarbush and Stowe I was quickly reminded why I won't be going back. Other than the 1.5 hours less it takes to get here its like TMZ on snow, packed w/wannabes, its ridiculous. They advertised PP when it was really PPCDT, packed powder chalk dust torture, which for the life of me I could not figure out why the conditions were so opposite of what I had experienced at Magic the day before, obviously Magic was 100% au naturale is why! My next trip back in a month or so will be with the wife and kids and it will def be at Bromley...maybe with a side trip for Dad to Magic ! Other than that I'm heading North !

You just have to know where/ to go at Stratton. Park at the Sun Bowl, ski the trees, and you'll be fine! Using my free ticket on Friday, should be some decent snow left in the trees!
