To me it looks like an undersized culvert for a water bar crossing (probably old snowmaking pipe was used).

Anyone familiar with the stratton rollout? This is from their blog so I assume they plan these trails will be open, does black bear open day one or is the effort on the snow bowl side?

Following last year’s successful implementation of 70 HKD KLIK snowmaking hydrants on Suntanner and Polar Bear, the mountain is going all in on the system, installing another 160 HKD KLIK hydrants on a number of favorite trails consisting of Franks Fall Line, Mike’s Way, West Meadow, Drifter Link and Old Log Road.

Up top, They work on Black Bear and Franks first. Then maybe Polar Bear or Upper Tamerack. Mike’s Way and Upper Spruce come next. The wider trails (Upper Standard, Meadows are usually last.).

At the bottom, Sutanner and Old Log road are usually the first to be opened.

Closer to Christmas’s they try to open trails that will serve Sun Bowl. Lower Down Easter is usually the first. Again, the wider trails are usually last (Supertrail),

I could be wrong but, from web cam views and the limited snowmaking windows it looks like this years initial roll out could be limited to North American (Frank's Falline) and Suntanner with only the gondola running. I've seen snow being made on Polar but other than that nothing that's viewable from the cams. You likely won't see anything until temps improve later this weekend.

Black Bear is in the mix even though can’t see on cam. It’s always in the first batch to open.

Open pushed back to Friday, and they may need some luck for that.

Podcast facts:
12,000 GPM
1,500 hydrants
1,2000 stationary guns
200 million gallons storage

As we’ve noted, very underrated but in reality a snowmaking powerhouse.

The only thing that bugs me about their snowmaking is they often let whales sit for a week before they push them out. I know there is an advantage to letting them dry before you push them, but sometimes it's ridiculous how long they wait.

I'm also starting to think Friday may be in jeopardy. They're calling for up to 8" Wednesday - that will help. But I don't think they can get the guns on for very long until the weekend.

Agree, for most, during the storm on Thanksgiving, the wetbulb temp is likely to the MARGINAL at best, especially down low where just about anyone looking to get open, or get open down to the base, is going to need some decent production hours.

Unfortunately I am guessing that come next Monday, we'll end up with less resorts who hoped to open for the weekend succesful at getting open than didn't quite have enough snowmaking hours. I truly hope I am wrong on that one!!

From a purely operational standpoint, you’d prefer cold air after tonight’s front, and no storm. As it is cold doesn’t come in until Thursday evening after the storm, hence Friday being questionable. I do believe Saturday is possible it’ll just be thin and limited on lower part of Mountian. One reason why Stratton is a great early season option - they can open more terrain, and get more snow, on the best terrain which is all above circa 2,500’ and can be lapped via 2 high speed lifts.

But the cold does come in and it’s the real deal. Unless there’s some philosophical reason not to, everyone should be open by Sunday. And those open but not TTB should be by then.

The Storm Skiing Journal has a podcast this week with the Stratton President and he reviews some of the near and longer term snowmaking improvements. Near term - tons of Kliks, longer term - installing snowmaking over in Sun Bowl where it doesn't exist.

They'll probably overgroom the hell out of those trails then too

Another Stratton delay.... From their FB page..

Here’s what we know, to let you know with transparency. Our Mountain Operations Team has officially made the call: we will not open Friday, and Saturday is not looking promising either. The missing links are sustained cold temperatures, base area access via Suntanner, and overall top-to-bottom base depth for grooming.
Our eyes remain on the prize, and that’s getting you out on the mountain. We are optimistic about the potential to spin lifts on Sunday, but we’ll need cold temperatures every night, so the opening plan remains as fluid as the weather.
We’ll have another Operations update as things evolve, we’re watching a potential incoming system on Thursday, and will provide a go or no-go for Sunday no later than Saturday morning. Keep an eye on the Mountain Report for updates. The good news - the forecast starting Saturday calls for cold temperatures around the clock for potentially 10+ days. We’ll be off and running if that holds true. We appreciate all of your patience, and mostly your passion for the mountain we all call home.

You know how Stratton rolls. Gotta have edge to edge deep coverage before any snowmaking routes get open. And they sure as hell ain't opening anything on 10'' of natural.

No 20 laps by 1pm home by dinner for you!
