Reasonably priced ( don't expect luxury) lodge about a mile from Lincoln Peak base area. Common room with big fireplace, outdoor hot tub, on the shuttle route. My advice is to request a room on the upper level.

Assuming you mean the one at Sugarbush. It's a nice place, we stayed there once a few years back. They have a nice common room with a fire place that was good to chill out in.

Don't forget to check out the Golden Lion. The owner is a member here and gives a discount to AlpineZone members. I haven't stayed there, yet, but I hear it's nice.

Stayed there with my family last month (foliage/hiking/checking out MRG/etc). Honest opinion: Most importantly it was clean, but the rooms/overall structure are a bit tired. My wife tends to be a little more discriminating about these things than I am and she wasn't terribly impressed initially but the hot tub helped and it all turned out fine. I slept well, which is the main thing I need in a room under most circumstances. Solid breakfast included but one morning there was a wait for fresh coffee (= delayed :-o). Great location out back on the Mad River, which was wonderful for the kids but probably not a factor in wintertime. Owners were friendly and price was reasonable. We'd likely stay there again -- hope my frank assessment doesn't ace me out of a discount ;-)

My wife & I stayed there a few years back & thought it was great. Comfy, affordable & close to both Sugarbush mountains. If you're looking for posh accomodations or old-style B&B atmosphere, they don't have it but neither of those was important to me.

We also did the Ski & Stay package & it was a great deal. I highly recommend the place if you like comfortable, affordable accomodations.

I also highly recommend the Golden Lion Riverside as a great place to stay.

Sugar Lodge is nice...rooms are a bit small though. As said before the big great room make the place as well as the cookies you have waiting for you when you return from skiing.

I do know that Michael and Melinda are constantly making improvements to the place and I believe they've only owned it for a few years. I feel it's a good value considering the home cooked breakfast and the location at the bottom of the Lincoln Peak Access Road can't be beat.

I appreciate an honest assessment, especially one as politely given as yours. Of course it is an ongoing effort to keep moving forward with upgrades to the property while still staying within the budget category. There are plenty of places in the Valley for $150+ a night and they are wonderful but we'll never compete with them.

In the four years that we've been here we've:

* Done major upgrades to two of the efficiencies and several thousand dollars worth of work to the other two
* Replaced the roof on the lodge
* Replaced the front deck
* Replaced every mattress and box springs at the inn (just last year)
* Put in air conditioning units in all the rooms (not important to this crowd, but you wouldn't believe how many people expect it on a August day when it's 79 degrees out)
* Fixed many defects with plumbing, heating, etc., that don't really show up but are critical

My list of things still to accomplish is huge and of course a great ski season would help (not to mention some relief from brutal fuel prices and a pause from the relentless rise in property taxes).

But in the meanwhile our goals are a clean room, a comfortable bed, a hearty breakfast (sorry about the delay on coffee--I think I remember the day you're talking about) and a fair price.

BTW--I don't know the rooms at the Sugarlodge very well, but the owners are very nice, it's a great location for skiing LP, and I like their common room quite a bit.

I really liked Sugar Lodge. The ski and stay package we did was very reasonable (Ski the Valley 3 day tickets), the accommodations were clean, though simple, common room was very nice, and continental breakfast was plentiful. If we had wanted to, the shuttle stopped there so we wouldn't have needed to use our car, too. I would stay there again.

Understood, and I certainly like value.

As I say, I slept well!

FTR I didn't intend to make this sound like a big deal. We arrived for breakfast at peak time that day (Saturday of Columbus Day weekend). Most importantly, it was good coffee ...

I appreciate your reply here and keep up the good work. See you again sometime.
