The mountains compare in many ways on terrain, though the Slide Brook development adds a dimension to the bush, perhaps offsetting the Snowfields.
Interesting comparison. Also, interesting that nobody who's been to both has yet disputed my claim that these are the two best in the East. If someone thinks there is a better mountain, let me know so I can try it! ;)

OK; you ought to give Stowe or Jay a try before making any "best in the East" claims.
I'll concede that point. Someday...

The Bush has a "wow" view from several places.

Sugarbush. Good snow, great natural terrain, classic mogul runs.

IMO the 'Loaf is overrated on these forums-- on all accounts.

Haven't been to the Loaf but the Bush is my fav mtn. I had a pass there for 2 years in college and I loved every minute of it. Unfortunately I can't afford $1000 for a pass at this point in my life.

$1000?

Does that come with a seasonal locker and hooker?
Unfortunately not.

The response I got about having a cheaper pass for recent grads was to get the North pass. Although I enjoy North, South is the best part of Sugarbush IMO and I would rather go to a different mtn that is cheaper than pay to go to North only.

I've been to the loaf once, back in '00, had great conditions there and was a darn good long weekend.

maybe the loaf has more stashes and i think it got more vert but i was not there long enough to dial into anyof that... so i give the nod to bush because a) its closer, and b) i know it better.

totally unscientific... but there you have it. i am also just a big fan of VT.

I would easily say that the best skiing that I have ever had in the east has been at Sugarloaf, especially April 1996/1997 with outrageous snowfield skiing.

This is a mountain where you can literally have a whole trail to yourself on a midweek day.

As for mogul runs, Bubblecuffer, Winters Way and Skidder have plenty of huge bumps.

It's no secret that the mountain suffers from a lack of snow, especially the last three years. Hopefully the big winter snow's will return to Maine.

All that being said, I think that Whiteface can also compete with both Sugarbush and Sugarloaf.

I've voted

I've voted with my mouse clicker and with my money... a number of times.

I was only at the loaf a few times in the early to mid 80s. The second weekend there I wandered further up the road and found that I liked Saddleback more. I thought it had a better atmosphere.

My big gripe about the loaf, tho is the distance. That kept me from having a ski house that far up, while I did that here for a number of years.

My buying a place here was the luck of finding a place that I could afford, first as a second home, and now as a home.

Nice place to live!

SRO, those are great shots but two questions...

1) How did you get the moon to offer his opinion?

B) What is that building at South? Is that an artist's rendition of what the Lodge was to be?

Gotta get a full moon shot like that, this winter!

Me! Me! pick me! The second shot appears to be the Sugarbush Inn taken from the Pavilion across the street. Am I right, SRO? SRO photography is very very good. Keep up the good work.

It took me some time to make a decision but I voted for Sugarbush. It is really could go either way though. I love the MRV so that does play into my decision. As far as the two best..those two would be hard to beat but like Jim says Stowe and Jay are a must try...and Whiteface on a good snow day could stack up.

Been to the 'bush, the 'loaf, Jay, Stowe, White Face and Sugar Bowl too. I can't decide between the 'loaf or the 'bush. If they aren't the best in the East the Bush and Loaf are in the top five. I like Jay and Stowe, but ski at Sugarbush the most because of proximity.

It's the Sugarbush Inn from the field down below the SI, next to Southface. Sorry Noski, wrong side of the road.

Sugarloaf is way to far at 5.5 hours.

no way, sugarloaf is under 4 hours easily from boston.
That's a stretch. It takes about 3:30 to get to the NH seacoast and that was with a friend who drives Maine roads for a living. I guess if you live north of the city and hit dry road conditions and good visibility, you can do it in about 4 hours.

I remember when me and my dad left for sugarloaf at like 4 am and we got there in 3 and a half hours. Still usually it isnt more than 4 hours as long as you leave early.

Well, I suppose if you haul ass and don't stop. In any event, I don't think the 'Loaf is as far as everyone thinks. Certainly a comfortable trip as an overnight from the Boston area (leave early, ski day 1, drink beer/sleep, ski AM, go home). You are right the key is leaving early in the AM.

going through towns like farmington at like 9 am kills your time because of all the traffic

Boy, that Greg knows how to start a thread and get alot of bites. I've never been to Sugarloaf, I hope to correct that this season. I love Sugarbush, it has alot to offer all levels of skiers. IMO Castlerock is a Northeast gem.
