i have been to sugarloaf once. i am not a sugarloafer though. HYPE :) i don't buy into the marketing pitch. it is genious marketing, i give it that. loaf is a special place, don't get me wrong on that aspect. i am no more a sugarloafer than i am a burker, or cannonite, or mrg'r, or jayer, or a tuxer, etc.,

I would have to disagree with this statement. Skiing at Sugarloaf takes dedication to the mountain, as it is very remote, often has extreme weather conditions, and is unlikely to reward the first time skier with good conditions.

The worst part of a trip to Sugarloaf is leaving, I always feel like I am leaving a small piece of me behind. (not sure if that makes sense to most people?)

not sure exactly what you are disagreeing with specifically, but according to sugarloaf... you are a "sugarloafer" the first time you visit sugarloaf, which sure doesn't take much dedication in my opinion. most mountains are unlikely to reward first time skiers with good conditions, even jay, so that seems irrelevent. and there are a lot of areas that are remote and have difficult weather conditions. as i said, loaf is a special place. i wasn't saying loaf is hype, just the whole 'sugarloafer' thing. it is genious, make people feel something special about the mountain so that they would return (loaf does that just by being that great mountain that it is), but more importantly, get people to market the mountain for you for free (which is what the whole "sugarloafer since..." ultimately does). great marketing. probably one of the best skiing marketing tactics ever used.

What I was disagreeing with is the fact that I do not see "being a Sugarloafer since" a marketing ploy, but more of something that one would take pride in. Sugarloaf is the most off the beaten path ski area that I have driven to in New England, save for Saddleback and Big Squaw.

Also no other mountain that I have skied at in New England over the past 20+ years has offered the harsh weather and extreme ski conditions that Sugarloaf does. Again this is something that you experience with multiple visits to the mountain.

I would have to agree with River here that "Sugarloafer since..." is most certainly a marketing ploy. It is a way to put the name of the mountain in the heads of all your friends. Granted, it's off the beaten path, but that makes it no more special than any of the other great mountains out there.

I don't know; I truly think there is something special about the Loaf. Probably the coolest vibe of any ski area I've been to, except for maybe MRG. Marketing ploy? Maybe. But I really don't care. Sugarloafer Since 2004, baby, and proud of it!
