Thanks again for the suggestions guys... it is much appreciated.

I think what I'm going to do is start to make a list of accommodations within my price range for each of the resorts I am considering.

Then when I am given the go ahead to make reservations I'll check availability and where we go will be determined by where I am able to find room(s) without breaking the bank.

More food for thought. When the time is right and you find some accomodations that seem suitable, pick up the phone. I have saved a lot money just talking to the proprietors/staff, showing you're serious and not a browser. There is a lot of stuff that is not advertised. It's amazing the combos they come up with.

On a side note I'm likely taking a midweek trip to either Sugarbush or Killington during probably the second week of January. Right now the plan is to go solo but I may have a date with me who would be a first time skier. If I have date with me I know Killington has a decent size learners area. But what about Sugarbush?

Sugarbush has a great learning area with their trails that are located off the Gate House and Village Double chairs. Most first timers take lessons in that area and they offer a package geared to new skiers:

i wouldn't take a first timer all the way to bush from joisey. bush is not a beginner's mt. IMHO

meh, done it many times - just avoid the canyon and grand summit lifts at peak times and its fine.... 10minutes tops. grand summit right after lunch 20-30, stay away!

killy, stratton or okemo won't be any better - if you have to go that week you just need to plan and be in the mindset that its going to be crowded

Midweek, Killington isn't crowded at all Presidents Week other than the family areas. If you're using Snowshed, Rams Head, or the gondolas, it's busy. The rest of the mountain is like a typical midwinter Friday. When you remove the blackout season pass people from the hill, even the peak holiday periods aren't all that bad.

I ususally let friend use my place at the river presidents week after I leave on Monday and all the reports I get are lodging is full, but crowds are not that bad on the hill. X-mass week can get crazy depending on when the holiday falls.

Its a remote possibility, but I was looking at the Smuggs booking engine on their website and was able to get a quote of 960 for a studio condo with 1 queen and 1 pullout with lift tickets and activities (but no rentals).

This would be the far upper end of the price range my friends would be comfortable with and by the time I convince them I may not be able to book at that price.

But my thoughts were this might be ideal as I know they are known for being beginner friendly and my friend's wife would be interested in some of the activities included with the cost of the package. Plus I think this is the type of vacation she was imagining when thinking of doing a Vermont ski vacation.

skiquatro will disagree with me, but I'd avoid Smuggs on holiday weeks. all double chairs, so lift lines can get long.

This. And if you are willing to drive to Smuggs, Bretton Woods is probably just as far and is probably a better match. If you consider that option, I imagine you'll find (relatively) cheap ski and stay deals at hotels in Twin Mountain, just a short drive up the road.

Yeah I was actually just looking at hotels around Bretton Woods out of curiosity.

I have a feeling I'm not gonna get the go ahead to make reservations until it gets to point where places are mostly booked. But I figure if I leave myself open to several options where we go can be dictated by where I am able to make hotel reservations.

Not to highjack the thread, but..... I am up at Burke Prez weekend (Saturday - Tuesday). Was toying with the idea of heading to Bretton Woods Prez Tuesday and cutting Burke short one day. Anticipated crowds "ok" there on prez Tuesday? FWIW, we will return to Lyndonville that night. Then finish the week at JP. Thx
