Summer Depression

Everyone has it. Every rainy day of the summer you sit inside and look at the rain thinking "if this was only snow." You look at mountain profiles and check the websites of ski resorts even though chances are, they won't change all summer. You go online and look at pictures of skiing/riding from the previous season. I just can't survive. I'm dieing here! I want to ride but for me the season is over. We need a way to get us to next season. Maybe dirt skiing? I just don't know how to deal with it. For now I have to bike until next season.

During the rainstorms here in Boston last week, my ski buddy and I would begin e-mails with the line: "If only all this rain was snow..." I feel your pain.

Look at it this way, all that biking is preparing your legs for all the skiing you'll do in the winter!

I recommend going out and enjoying nature regardless of the season. Despite being very passionate about my skiing, I hardly have any understanding of this sort of depression. There is much too much interesting and exciting about the world regardless of season to be depressed. Even after my season ends in June :D, I look forward to the next with longing but dismiss not the bounty of outdoor pursuits to enjoy in t-shirt and shorts during the off season.

Chile in about 70 days

What is keeping me sain is I'm going to Chile with a group of friends and John Egan as one of the guides. Can't wait but is making the depression less. Besides skiing what I miss most is the community and commodore I find in Ski Country. Just not the same here in the summer.

In the words of a famous ex-president, I feel your pain.

I appreaciate RC's viewpoint...and I aspire to achieve. But so far this spring, and maybe because it's been such a cold spring, I seem to be thinking a lot about skiing. I'm not due for new gear...nothing special for next year aside from a plus-up in day trips maybe.

I attribute "some" of this sensation to AZ. The "Winter springs eternal" via Ski Area Challenges etc seem to keep thoughts of skiing bubbling to the top.

I've got plenty to do, plenty of vaca available to do it...and I'm in no hurry to skip summer. So let's get this warm weather going folks. The pool is still in the 50's *brrrr*

Hoops @ Lunch is progressing nicely...as long as it isn't raining. I had a hot hand yesterday.

I'm with River....spring/summer/fall is a great time for outdoors sports. I love skiing just as much as anyone here (I think!!), but I love this time of year as well. Get out and do some hiking, biking, boating, travelling, etc. Winter will be back before we know it.

I hope to use the summer season to do some hiking as well as plan my ski trips for next winter. Remember the summer may be the dulldrums for most of us ski bums who are addictted to skiing, but the summer months are the best time to buy your next season's season pass. I know that most of the real summer deals on passes have already past or expired, but it's much better than buying them at the beginning of next season when they are the most expensive.

I'm a little depressed the first couple of weeks after the last time I ski. After that, I through myself into hiking, biking and going to the YMCA. My wife and I our both teachers so that affords us alot of time for family vacations and summer activities.

When Sept. rolls around I'm in full prep mode. I'm a rep for a ski manufacturer so I start getting busy with that and I'm a Mountain Host at Whiteface so I'm up there alot for different training (lift evac, first aid, etc.) as well as Oct. Fest. These things kinda make me feel like the season has started even though the lifts havn't started turning yet.

A 7 month off season is too long to be depressed.

Just move out West. With Squaw, Mammoth, Snowbird, Arapahoe, Hood & Bachelor still open with 100" bases, who has time for depression? Then, once the lifts actually close, you can still hike in July/August/Sept until the snow start falling again in October & get some early turns in at Brighton, Loveland, Arapahoe & Copper. I personally get sick of all that skiing and can't wait for my three month summer.

This is the first year since I started skiing that I'm not depressed... I think because I'm going back out West next year..and the end of this season got me that much closer. I'm having fun dreaming of my new adventures.. should I go to Wyoming and Utah, Montana and Utah..the possibilities are endless!! AND I'm training for the Trek Accross Maine June 16-19. 180 miles in three days on a bicycle for the American Lung Assocation. Once that's over it will be almost July...then the hiking begins...in August I've rented a beach house in Corea Maine where I can swim, bike, hike and pick mussels off the rocks. Then, it's Sept... FALL..woohooooooooooooooooo almost there 2 more months... Fall hiking, biking and camping in Bar Harbor..chilly nights and frosty mornings. Then, October..the leaves are turning and we've really on got one more month.. ....November!! NOW we're getting somewhere!

My advice to those suffering the blues... live every day to it's fullest because tomorrow could be your last! :)

One last chance to ski in Stowe...

For all those in the northeast still aching for one last trip on skis, there is hope! Stowe and Burton are having a free "Last Trick Rail Jam" on Saturday from 11am - 1pm. More info is on their event calendar: http://summer.stowe.com/news/event_calendar.php

It's maybe better than nothing? And it's supposed to be GORGEOUS this weekend! Bring sunscreen. :)

I'm not depressed. I got plenty of days this year (my 2nd year skiing), I learned a lot and I actually felt "at peace" when ending the season. It might have something to do with the fact that I needed new skis. I got really cheap ones just to learn skiing and figured I'm going to get better ones once I learn and am sure I want to follow this sport. I took two carving courses this winter and got to experience the fun of it on the real carving skis!!! Now skiing on my old buddies just doesn't do it for me and it feels more like a struggle. So I'd rather wait for the next season and really enjoy it on the new skis. I'm getting my new Elan Speedwaves next week and then I'm reeeeeaaaally going to long for winter.

I love skiing but I do love what spring, summer and fall have to offer. I love to travel and hike. I have plenty trips planned this year around NYC area, but also NH, ME, CT and MA. Between all my activities and family, the time just flies for me and I know winter will come soon.

That's the right advice, in the word's of John Soule "Go West, Young Man" I am doing that next week, and Mammoth is looking really fine:

The bummer part about our trip is that we will be so close to Yosemite Park, but Tioga road is closed due to 219% of normal snowfall. This is the main access point to the park, but due to avalanche danger it is not possible to plow the whole road open yet. Perhaps in two weeks time they will get the road opened.

We do Chile every summer. No guide needed and you can survive just fine with a 10 word Spanish vocabulary. The ski resorts are all-inclusive so all you need to book is airline, hotel, and ground transportation.
