Yes, because they are on a family vacation and have been not-really-skiing all week.

Wow this thread is full of butthurt.

I never once have not been able to sit down, for any period of time, somewhere at a ski resort. It may mean going to a different on mountain eatery or what have you, but I dont even notice these types of things.

Frankly, who cares. Someone got there before you did.

There was plenty of that going on at Mt. Ellen on 12/31. Our group saw a few spots at a table and we sat down much to the displeasure of the couple sitting at the table with no ski gear on but they didn't say anything.

If I by myself I'll just sit at an open chair. If I'm there with a bunch of people and there's a table that no one is sitting at with bags on it, we'll move their bags to under the table and use it.

I just grab a seat...let them tell me to get up and I'll just say sure, as soon as your spouse/family/friend comes. That pretty much ends the conversation.
'Zactly what I say. In other words, "I'll bet you this seat that I will be done and gone before your friends show up."

I usually sit with random people and then jump into their conversations and eat their potato chips and / or dip a spoon into their chili.

Has anyone ever been on a cruise and tried to get a lounge chair on the deck?

Ha, that was the issue in Jamaica last week. People would put their towels or other stuff on the chairs and disappear for the the day. If you didn't grab one first thing in the morning you were screwed.

There should be a Lodge Mom room like the cell phone parking lots at airports now. You have to hang out there until your kids/family come are ready to sit and then you can come and set up at a table.

Mount Snow's free bag check, that's been there for atleast 5 years now (probably longer) is GREAT! They've even gotten to the point with all the signage around in the base lodge notifying folks of the FREE bag check that bags left at the tables are likely to be brought to bag check, and they've evn taken down most of, if not all the hooks that used to be up on the various posts/walls/etc where folks used to hang their bags. It's made sitting at the tables in the base lodge much easier and spacious than it used to be. That being said, table squatting always has been and likely always will be an issue at most every base lodge :(

My gear bag, if I even bring one, most of the time is in the Mount Snow Ski Club (the building between the base lodge and where the shuttle buses drop folks off) where there's a set of cubbies for members. Glenn and Vcunning actually keep their stuff in seasonal lockers that they each rent.

This past weekend for the 1st time that I can remember in a few years, they actually completely filled up all the bag check spaces! It was VERY crowded at Mount Snow last weekend!

When it gets crowded, I usually walk over to someone that is holding a table and start talking to them like I know them and then just sit down at the table. It usually confuses the hell out of them and they are too embarassed that they don't know who I am that I never get called out. Works like a charm!

This is why I avoid the lodges at the base of the mountain---EAT YOUR LUNCH AT THE TOP! Trust me, It works! No boot-bags cluttered on or underneath the table--no non-skiing table Squatters! Its a win-win situtation. Plus I like the view! (and I usually pick a lodge by the expert terrain (like sunnyside at waterville or Camp III at Loon, or Summit at Cannon)

Isn't the Sunnyside lodge right on the busiest beginner slope at Waterville?

True--but thats why you go before 10:45. I eat my breakfast at 4:45am before I leave--so why not go early? Then I follow it up with another snack at 1:30 and then my "apres ski" in my minivan at 4:30

My grandfather would use to drive our whole family up to Wildcat in his old Mobile Home RV thingy! He would park overnight in the RV camp by Cranmore, and then in the early morning,--while we were still asleep, he would start that thing up and drive up the windy road to park at the mountain!!

The vehicle died a painful death in which he pushed the reverse button by mistake on the highway (it was a weird manual-tranmission thing with push-buttons)

Breakfast is at the Schwendi Hutte for Strudel and a hot chocolate with an "add a shot" of Dr. McGillicuddy's. It's safer than lunch at Schwendi Hutte which might include a double sized beer that leads to what is known as a "Schwendi turn" on the head wall above Gema and Ciao. Spectacular!
