We have access to a house near tenney next winter so I was hoping to take my kids somewhere besides Loon or Waterville. How's the skiing compared to Loon and Waterville for the couple of hours i'm gonna get out myself? I've skied Loon 3 times and Waterville about 5 times. I'm not overly excited about the idea of hitting either on a weekend, hence the Tenney idea.

Only reason i even knew it was there is driving down 25 towards Hannafords, its kinda right in your face.

go to Ragged instead

I had some good days at Tenney, but it is very flat, no such thing as a mogul. It has some mellow cruisers with character and a couple low angle glades that are fun. The lack of a high speed lift is the big issue. At least 15 minutes to get to the top.

Ragged is only about 20 minutes from Tenney

What type of skiing does the family enjoy? For groomed intermediate skiing, I actually think Tenney is superior to Waterville or Loon due to less traffic which also means less scraped/icy conditions. Not much pitch or challenge but a good family mountain. Ragged is a great family mountain too. More terrain options but not much more pitch than Tenney.

Steve is spot on

I'm a dumbass and didn't read that you'd be skiing with kids. Tenney is a great choice for kids. Unless it rains, there isn't such a thing as ice there. You'll have them on soft cordoroy up until close.

Ragged will have better options for yourself when you get to make a few runs on your own.

If I were bringing young children skiing, I would take Tenney or Ragged over Loon, Waterville and Cannon as the crowds are far less than the other areas as is the cost.

Loon and Waterville are better for beginning skiing and learning how to ski. Loon has green trails from the top, which is fun as a kid just because of the Gondola alone. Waterville has that skizilla thing too. As already said, you'd have to deal with the crowds at both places on a weekend.

We started our kids a tenney. Easy to get to and small crowds. I bought a pass there 2 years ago and never even went. It was a good deal and I bought one. Nice family place. I could not do it every weekend. From where you are it would be a good option to change it up.

This is of course if they decide to even open.......

In 2006-2007 they bagged the season in early December and burned a lot of people.

wow, wasnt aware of that. Its not like we were gonna buy passes there however, just trying to get a feel for options other then waterville and loon, which in my limited experience, have been mobbed on weekends.

I didnt know ragged was close by either.

Tenney, like Ragged seems to depend a lot on natural snow. In a lean snow year Tenney won't have much open (if they are open). The summit lift is really slow which may be good for loading kids but frustratingly slow. The glades and narrow trails are fun but as another said don't offer much in the way of moguls.

I'd drive to Cannon if you were skiing with out kids. Cannon may have more ice here and there, but there is more pitch, verticle and challenge. With good natural snow doing Mittersill laps or mining fresh powder at Jasper's Hideway is fun.

I use to just get in my car and drive to the River. Waterville is great for families. In that area I still think Loon is a great option as well as Cannon. Cannon will need to have Natural snow. Loon will have snow no matter what.

That is because they really are not close to either. But then again, Tenney is almost an hour away from both Waterville and Loon so Ragged is only a twenty minute longer drive than Tenney which still puts it within the same ball park.

I think that if you want to avoid crowds then Tenney or Ragged are better options with kids. My kids have skied Ragged, Tenney, WV and Loon since they were very, very little and when they were young their preferences were always Tenney and Ragged. I think Tenney skis bigger than it is. I myself don't get bored there (when it is close to fully open). My wife who is not an aggressive skier doesn't love WV ( and we own a condo there) and likes Tenney and Ragged. My kids always felt like they skied the whole mountain and it isn't a mortgage payment to spend the day there. Ditto for Ragged. Gunstock is a good alternative but it is farther away. The new Tuckerbrook section of Cannon is great for kids but the principal mountain can be a bear for kids. I think Tenney would be a great alternative to WV or Loon.
