It still mid-summer but now is the perfect time to start putting away money for a mad steezy ski trip this season. Where is everybody planning on going? The three places I'll hit for sure are Blue mountain, Stowe and Jackson Hole. I really want to ski in Utah. I'm thinking about taking 2 weeks off in January and flying to Salt Lake City..renting a Suburu Outback...and hitting a few Utah resorts...then spending a few days at Jackson Hole/Grand Targhee...then driving up to Bozeman MT..and skiing Bridger Bowl/Big Sky/Moonlight basin with my friend Tom. Then maybe more Jackson Hole or Utah based on the snow. That would be a mad steezy ski-fari.

I figure we have about 100 more days until the ski season starts in the East..maybe 80-90 more days until Loveland and A-basin open a white ribbon of death..The days are getting shorter..and pretty soon..we'll be shredding the gnar!!!!

then Revelstoke. plus they will have the new lift installed.
in utah i will do powder mountain, snowbasin, and we end up doing a few days at the bird.

I've pre-bought tickets for 4 weekends in VT, which is a lot for me. I did zero overnights last year. I simply don't have the vacation time to burn on big trips nor the dough currently. So, if I get those 4 weekends in plus another twenty days spread between my pass at Tenney and a few other places from a discount card, I'll be more than happy. Last year saw 20 days on snow, increasing that total by twenty percent would be great.

Ideally, I'd like to get back to Abasin next spring. But I'm not sure how realistic that will be between finances and increasing costs for everything. So it's likely the only overnight trip will be to VT next season. I missed out on the trip we planned for Sugarbush/MRG in March so I *really* need to go next season.

There is a possibility of hitting somewhere in Colorado this winter. Def at least one over-night to VT.

A couple of years ago I worked it so that i was in Sacramento on business and popped over to Lake Tahoe for some skiing. I'm hoping for something similar this year, hitting a mountain near Denver.

Good luck finding a rental car company that'll let you take a Subie across state borders . . . Now that those things have GPS, you can't just give them the wink and the nod anymore.

As for me, I'm going to hit Stowe in the East, and Summit County out west.

Is this true??? I thought people sometimes take road trips with rental cars...I find the thing about going over state borders hard to believe. Especially since recent out of town visitors flew into Newark NJ, rented a car and drove here to PA..

I think it depends on the agency. I know when I lived in Ohio, I flew back to New England into Hartford and rented a car for the week. I told the agency I was taking the car to visit friends and family in Mass, ME, NH and VT and they had no issues with it. Only state the vehicle didn't see was RI.

I have a jillion miles in rental cars. Taking it to Mexico? Sure, that's an issue. Crossing state lines? I've never ever heard of that. If it's a 1-way rental, you might pay a hefty drop charge but you can drive wherever you want in the country. I've also never had an issue taking a rental car into Canada. I've rented cars in New Hampshire to buzz the 5 hour / 300 mile drive up to Montreal for business meetings. I've gone from SEA-TAC to Vancouver many times.

I'm completely unplanned for the winter so far. I go out to Vancouver for Christmas at my sister's house and usually grab a few days before the holiday. I have a free place to stay at Whistler and my sister has a Subaru I can usually borrow. I'm unemployed at the moment so it's tough to predict if I'll be able to break free next winter other than the usual every-weekend warrior stuff.

This has to be the exception with rental car companies. RI has an airport that serves near by MA & CT and most business travelers rent vehicles. When I go to Tahoe and Mammoth I usually fly to Reno and drive to CA.

Now taking a rental car to Mexico is another story.
