Yup! Good things are right around the calendar. Soon enough most of us will gear up for weekend leaf collection battles then strip off the summer wax! :fangun:

I just picked up 4 sets of skis that were in getting the summer wax applied.

I actually don't like it when the days start getting shorter, until it get's closer to ski season. All it means to me now is that it will start getting harder to get in bike rides after work

+1

What they need is like a 3 hour daylight savings time thing. Keep it llight until about 8:30 until about November 1st, and then bam bring on the much shorter days (okay I realize there's a few astrophysics logistical things to fingure out before that can happen :) )

It doesn't really get noticeable till the end of July - mid August. From now until then is one of my favorite times of the year because of being able to do things after work. Once Labor Day rolls around then it really starts to get noticeable, particularly on the water.

I hate the heat, I hate the humidity, I hate long days. Need snow, need lots of snow, right now, right here.

I am persuaded that winter sport enthusiasts have traces of Alaskan Malamute DNA:

"While Malamutes have been successfully raised in places such as Arizona, their dense coats generally make them unsuited for outdoor living in hot climates. When the weather gets hot, like any other breed of dog, the Malamute needs plenty of water and shade. They will grow a winter coat and subsequently shed it in spring."

I know skiers and boarders like that

The other great thing about the cold months is the absence of biting insects :smash:

While not Northeast skiing related, this post(read over on the skilifts.org forums, about The Canyons and their apparently very active off season construction taking place, definately got my ski stoke factor going a bit!

"From what I hear, the new base will be where Smokie's bar is located. The building will be torn down as soon as the asbestos remediation is completed, possibly this week or next. I am not sure where the turn will be located but my guess is somewhere between tower 4-7. The base will not be moved until the end of the summer season but the other work will take place during the summer. In addition, the old building next to the bar will be torn down. The ski patrol/clinic "temporary" building will also be gone and that whole slope will be regraded. The area (more or less) where the gondola ends today will become the lower terminal for the HSQ replacing the Golden Eagle lift which will also happen this year unless something has changed in the last few weeks. The new lift will have a mid-station about where the Golden Eagle ends now and will continue up to an area near the entrance to the terrain park on Sun Peak which will allow access to either Sun Peak or over to Red Pine/Saddleback. and on to Tombstone lift. The area above the current base of Golden Eagle will be regraded to make it easier to get to the base of the new HSQ. Some type of surface lift may be needed to complete this picture, I am fuzzy on these details. Also the Iron Mountain lift is supposed to be a go this year but the last I heard the exact location of the upper terminal was still up in the air due to permit issues but I have not heard any details on that in about a month or more so it may or may not be settled yet. This lift is also supposed to be a HSQ but I guess time will tell on that. I thought an announcement was going to be made already but I guess some details are still not final so all of this may be subject to change, but work on tearing down the buildings does seem to be moving along so something is happening for sure! I also heard the snow cat maintenance building may be moving to points unknown since it is in the way of the golf course which is supposed to start later this summer, although we have heard that before... It makes huge sense to relocate the 8-seater gondola base so it's next to the cabriolet lift coming up from the parking lot. The original location was only useful to sell quartershares in the Grand Summit. Since they had to auction off much of that inventory, it's pretty clear that was a bad decision.

The Canyons on a good snow day is amazing. I've hit it on waist-deep frozen smoke. Some memorable runs off 9990 that day. On a bad day, it's like skiing in New England. All that great south-facing terrain melts out.

It snowed on the top of Mt. Washington yesterday. Local news said they had to close the road to the top.

So - who's getting first turns?
