We banter this one every year. I agree that it's a blend of fact and fiction (or shall we say an over-zealous marketing department.) Regardless, I still really enjoy skiing there.

I think they get very compareable moisture to Stowe, if not a little bit less. That means that Jay might get more inches, lower density of snow, but Stowe will have more snow depth/pack.

Can't really comment on the Jay Cloud but I make it a point to visit Jay at least once every season. In the past 5 years that I've been going there, I've never seen that place in the sun. It's always cloudy up there.

I have experienced it. One St. Patties day a few years back I was lucky enough to have free passes and, lodging and about 50 pairs of demo powder skis at my beconning. 40 inches in 2 days. I got back to Stowe Sunday night and relized Mansfield recieved about half that amount. It was a classic J cloud scenario, and I don't think it happens as much as "they" say. But when it does it's magic. The third deepest day ever for me...

Went there spontaneously for the first time 4 years ago. I remember no snow was forecasted for ME and NH and we weren't expecting much weather wise; it was a 3 day trip. Jesus, did it dump while we were there! Never skied so many trees in such a short time. Doesn't prove anything but it sure left me with a strong impression of the place.

Good article. But the Jay Cloud has hardly been a secret and the cat was out of the bag long before 2008. Is the Jay Cloud real or hype. You be the judge. Though Jay does in fact get more snow than any other area in the eastern United States, Mansfield gets only slightly less and is a better mountain. You can call it the Jay Cloud or you can call it Jay being further north than other areas and being on the right angle of the Green Mountain Spine for upslope. Whatever you want to call, Jay gets more snow than any other area.

Non scientific anecdotal story here, but this made me a believer and you would be too if it happened to you. The year, 1988. It was a late Friday night drive up 1-91, just me and my girl, now wife of 20 years. We had reservations at the Hotel Jay. It was a clear night, stars were seen in the sky and commented upon. As soon as we exited the highway however, it began snowing. We barely made it up 242 and slid into a parking spot in front of the hotel. I was like a kid at Christmas, kept going over to the window and looking out. Woke up to a foot of fresh, light powder. Our tracks were the 3rd and 4th sets on the first 5 or 6 runs, the first 2 belonged to a couple of grinning sled dogs. We also skied some trees over where Beaver Pond glade is today. I'm a believer. Do they over hype it - yeah. But they have done a great job marketing the area, staying on message for years.
