The smell of snow is in the air. It's hard to describe but after living 58 years in the mountains, minus the 5 years in Maine, it's easy to recognize.

The weather forcasters say the northern relms of the northeast maybe for the middle of this week. It's not a real big deal, happens every year but kinda fun when it's in early October.

It actually happened last year close to the same date. This pic is from
Oct 2, 2008. Hopefully John A will post some pics of people getting out there if indeed it does snow.

Nice! I always love that first moment of ANY season where some part of your senses catches a piece of the next coming season...that first night in early August where a breeze hits you a certain way and instead of the balmy feel of a summer breeze it has that slight touch, not quite a bite yet, but the touch of fall in it...or that first rain storm in late March or early April where the rain, rather than cold and chilling (and threatening to turn to frozen precip), has a warmth to it that belies the mud and puddles of spring rather than frozen ground and ice...or that first afternoon in mid-May where you walk outside in the afternoon and notice that the angle of the sunlight is warm for that time of day, shining brighter than usual through the trees, and you know summer is coming...

or, of course, the best one, that hint of winter...which you have described as the smell...for me its usually a gray, overcast day in mid-November, when you can smell rotting leaves and feel moisture in the air but also feel that telltale bite, and you realize that if anything falls from the sky, it will not be in liquid form.

I can't beleive we're potentially only a few weeks away from early season snow.

I am hoping for an early start like it was in '05 but without the melt.
