Hum, either I’m missing something or Sugarbush is the only “major” area in VT not making snow?

There is not a stitch of snow on Gate House or Spring Fling. It is hard to tell about upper organgrinder or Upper Jester but the cameras seem to indicate there is not much going on.

Surprising but not really surprised. They must be waiting for the lower mountain temps to go after SB->Fling and Gatehouse. But 16 at the summit and 21 at the base is usually go time temps.

They posted on social media yesterday that they plan to fire up the guns next week...

Seems like an odd decision to me considering they had pretty good temps to at least start to get something down. Unless they thought they were going to lose what they make before the next cold window.

the cozy brown snows of the east
If they aren't going to start snowmaking then I wish they wouldn't send out emails like this (from Oct 25):

Winter is inching closer, and anticipation is building around the resort. Ready or not, if Mother Nature isn’t quite ready to deliver the goods, our snowmakers are on standby. As long as temperatures cooperate, we’re planning to fire up the snow guns on November 1st, just a week away.

Only thing I would say is that maybe as of Oct 25 they planned to start November 1 but didn't like the temps or length of the window as they got closer. No idea...still seems odd that many others took advantage of this window and Sugarbush didn't.

I don't know for certain but it would make sence that they want to conserve snowmaking budget for when they really need it. I am sure they need to be more conservetive now that there are people watching. Maybe?

Tough decision, and I can’t really fault them given the forecast over the next 5-6 days. And how early it is. It’s just the contrast to the other major (and some not so major) competing resorts.

That said, taking advantage of their elevation and stock piling snow at the summit is not a bad idea…..

Yea...I wouldn't have bothered down low. But making some up top wouldn't have been a bad idea. Doesn't really impact me much either way...I likely won't even have a chance to get up there until later in December.

And I think we can consider it official that "Rob Roy" is the trail being "added" to keep them at 111 after the merger of RT/HGT...

We're on the heels of 3" of snow at the summit, as our mountain operations team eagerly awaits a good temperature window to begin snowmaking. Right now it's looking like early next week for a solid stretch of adequate temps. Our current projected Opening Day for Lincoln Peak, weather permitting, is Saturday, November 18th. We will continue to keep you updated on projected opening terrain and snowmaking operations as we get closer to the season. We've got a host of exciting new capital projects to talk about this season including the newly recut Reverse Traverse (now combined with Heaven's Gate Traverse to all be called Reverse Traverse), bringing back the trail Rob Roy at Mt. Ellen, over $3 million in snowmaking improvements, an overhaul of Walt's at the Glen House, three new groomers, and much more.

So I know there is some angst here as to the slow snowmaking start, but I think we should be all thinking “Peace, Love, and Snow.” As in a trip back to 1996-1997.

Check out those SKIS!

IMG_7598.jpeg

Those skis were available for under $400 with bindings. And look at the “new” lifts of the time.

Anyone feel like dialing up the NYNEX Family Adventureland?

Good times. I don't think we'll see a mountain overhaul like that again.
