Closest I have gotten to getting "tangled" with a lift wasn't with a back pack, but one day when I was working a race, I have a hook on my belt that I can place the drills we use to set gates and safety net in when its not in use, and that hook briefly got stuck to the one of the back slats on a triple chair. Learned my lesson to fold the drill hook in after that one

I have a backpack and it is on the somewhat larger side. Main reason is I enjoy having my DSLR camera with me. So most of the size of the backpack is padding for the camera. I do also have spare goggle lenses in there and my bottle of gatorade.

I've been skiing with a backpack for also probably 20 years at this point. Only time I ever also almost got caught was this year once either this weekend or last weekend. I agree that unbuckling it seems to create more risk of getting stuck than having it buckled. But on the flip side, if it does get caught, there's only risk to the bag getting stuck on the lift and not a person ending up hanging from the bag. They pretty much started this last year with requiring it in front. I believe the Titus incident was the main reason. Last year only a few lifties were adamant about unbuckling it as well and not just having it in front. This year I've just always unbuckled it when hopping on the lift. Most runs I'm not even bothering to buckle it back up either now when skiing down.

Right where I want to be
Only out west do I wear a pack. Avy gear in places where it is needed (Brighton there is inbounds areas you need avy gear also Bridger bowl). The other reason is some ski areas you can be pretty far from a lodge and having a spare pair of gloves/mittens, water and a snack or 3 can be helpful.

I don’t wear a Camelback when mountain biking nor a backpack while lift served.

Did anyone see the Channel 5 segment about HG? And the short mention at the end of a "new beginner lift at North next year"?

Talking to my Stowe friends, sounds like they have been getting lots more snow and conditions are great. Knee deep today… looking at the Mansfield snowstake, they are at 62” now. That got me thinking about installing a snowstake. From sugarboxes, memorials and cool forts there are all kinds of cool things found in the woods. Would not be too tough to install, wondering where... thinking in the Lews Line area as snow seems to collect in that area. Any thoughts? Would be a neat resource! Or is there one already that I haven’t come across?

A either last year or a couple of years ago, on NR is believe, someone got their backpack caught in the chair, went through the unloading terminal and then fell. They were seriously injured. Thats when all the signs at the lift went up politely asking that backpacks be held in front.

Funny you should mention that--I was riding the t-bar with a former coworker at one of the first races this year, and he hooked the T, which resulted in both of us unloading a bit later than planned. I've been extra careful with my drill hook since (I usually try to have it on the far side of my body from the T anyhow, because if I have a drill on it, the drill pushes me to the outside otherwise).

It's also fun when you've got a bundle (of gates) over your shoulder, your pack slung over an arm, and your drill hanging off your belt...and the drill gets either hung up on the chair or lifted off the hook by the seat and set free.

I caught it; and don't recall the word "beginner" in Hammond's sentence...which indicated "another lift project next summer"

I don't think Tommy's Toy has run at all this year, so perhaps that is the lift Tyler Jankowski was referring to. If that is the case, replacing that lift instead of North Ridge would be really sad. Mt Ellen/North is the red headed stepchild of SB.

I started wearing a pack regularly when my kids were little. Needed all kinds of stuff for them, snacks, drinks, asthma inhalers etc. but then I just got used to leaving all my gear in there all the time. This way I can’t forget anything. You could reasonably refer to it as a ladies pocketbook. Also, don’t like carrying stuff on me. So there’s water, energy bars, car keys, wallet, alternate goggle lens, tissues, handiwipes, chapstick, eye drops, tums, smokes, skigee, bandanas. I use it for biking too, just add bug spray.

Respect to race coaches hucking gates and b-net up and down the hill in terrible conditions.
No pack, just a water bottle in my shell. If I have a camera, it's a film rangefinder and around my neck under the shell.
Really nice conditions today excepting SF which had the domes of death. Woods well blown-in all over.

Can’t be Tommy’s toy? Maybe Inverness?

I've heard they are putting a carpet in to replace Tommy's Toy. Will help VT Adaptive and true beginner lessons at ME.

Certainly not an alternative to replacing NRX though.

I would not consider Inverness to be a beginner lift. They rarely groom Walt's, which used to be a mellow trail for novice skiers. There is nothing super challenging off it, but Semi Tough and Brambles are not really easy for beginners, and Inverness is steep in parts and gets icy since it is groomed pretty much all season.

"Sugarbush is also planning to replace the current Tommy’s Toy rope tow with a new surface lift next spring, to be ready for the 2025/26 winter season."
Ugh; I guess I didn't watch the report to the end, where Tyler Jankowski did indeed say "beginner lift"; which confirms what's printed in this dated Valley Reporter article. Had my hopes up for a few minutes, anyway.

That would match the carpet over at South. I guess it would be good for the adaptive program, but I'd rather see NRX replaced.
