Friday was the day. Very nice to see some sun. Saturday and Sunday were smilar. Soft snow down bottom and a little more scrap and chunky up top. Still it was fun to ski with friends with minimal crowds. If you did not ski birch, it's probably gone for the season after the next few days.

I used to combine switching out the snows with taking off the ski rack, but I haven't used the rack in several years now. More often than not, it's just me so I'm just putting down one side of the back seat and tossing the skis inside the car. Removing the ski rack used to be a serious way to improve MPG (and cabin noise).

Compared to when I starting skiing - mid 80's- there are far fewer racks on highways. I have 3 sets in my basement. Some gutter racks, some custom to car, all scissor racks ( 6 pair of skis). I thought same - saves fuel, no whistling, and no worry about locks freezing.

Unless you have an SUV or the one seat option, they can be dangerous in an accident. No salt on bindings either.

I used to keep a cigar lighter (I'm not a smoker) in the glove box to heat up the locks for a few seconds to de-ice them.

Looks like SB got a couple of inches. The Gadd Peak webcam's windshield wiper blade is either stuck or frozen though.

I noticed the same a few weeks ago. Very few racks these days. Shorter skis and more SUVs allow them to fit inside more than they used to. If anything, roof boxes replaced some of the racks. We put the rack on once a year to transport the skis back and forth to VT for when we fly out west. Can fit them inside the car to and from the mountain but the dog takes that space when we travel to our home outside of VT.

I have Thule racks on both Subaru's We only use them for back and forth to Lincoln peak or Ellen. My skis never leave VT. Never had a lock freeze, never had any issues.

OMG the Ski Tote😅 I remember having one, using it maybe 2 times before deciding it was waaaayyyyy more hassle than whatever utility it might provide

I do love gear nostalgia from that era though!
I had a gray one with blue lettering back in the 80's! Not sure where the Ski Tote itself ever ended up, but I still have the cable lock that it came with in one of my old gear bags

To those already switching out their winter tires already...I'm envious. Living on a steep dirt road in Fayston I target Memorial Day. Currently the ruts are so bad more than a few neighbors are parking at the bottom and walking up. The Airbnbers are kind of fun to watch. Hap's towing is doing a bang up job...and making bank. A Suburban Propane truck needed to be winched out over the weekend. Have they closed Roxbury Gap yet?
I'm currently on a work trip to Seattle, explaining mud season to the uninitiated elicits some of the funniest looks.
