So I am super excited for the upcoming weekends, as every single one from now until the end of March has skiing in the plans.

First up was this weekend at Flatton**, for an annual family trip where some VERY generous friends of the family let us use their GORGEOUS ski house for FREE!

Then, with this week's change of fortune weather-wise, I was ever-the-more excited. I knew Flatton wouldnt get the same snow as the MRV or Stowe or even Kmart, but anything is better than rain, including the 8 inches of new snow they did get!

Well, at lunch today I checked their website to see what totals they were reporting, and in the snow report they proudly announced "Good Morning! Hope you are ready... This snow is what we dream about up here! Snow forecasted for Saturday and the temps should be perfect for the weekend. Our entire mountain was groomed last night,ENJOY!"

Enjoy? Enjoy skiing NO BUMPS all weekend long? Yes, they even groomed World Cup. Even in the leanest of snow years, WC usually has some sort of bumpiness to it, in my experience.

All those G's are making me nauseous!

So my questions to everyone are: Why would they do this? Was there something dangerous about the prior conditions? Why not leave a single bump run?

And, perhaps more importantly: assuming they do not seed, how long do you think it will take for a run at a non-skier's mountain like Flatton to bump back up to some sort of enjoyable level?

I understand that there is (in some people's opinions, or for safety's sake sometimes) a periodic need to mow down mogul fields once in awhile, but why do them all at once?!?!

**I don't usually like to name-call resorts, bc I almost always have fun on skis at most any resort, but in this cased, I am pissed and therefore have resorted to the name calling.

i was there on tuesday and wednesday for the ski demos and it rained, rained, rained. the mt was very soft and any tracks made would have frozen into ridges and sharp bumps that would not have been fun. while i didn't see any bump trails during my skiing, there may have been some out there somewhere.

i think the new snow will be soft enough that you'll find some fun pretty quickly. given the weather they had earlier in the week, you should be happy with good skiing conditions first. then you can complain about lack of bumps, etc.

I'll probably be there on Saturday, burning our free passes. Best bet for anything to even approach something other than gleaming-smooth trails would be Bear Down. That sometimes seems to bump a little, it even gets seeded, when the planets line-up.

At least they can't groom the glades.

Excellent point.

Saw this also! Was thinking of burning my freebie there Sunday, now reconsidering. Well they can't groom the trees like wa-loaf stated. With some overnight fresh Saturday night, we still might go for it. (be down at Snow). Still not sure if it's Snow or Killington Saturday. Probably Killington and its 30" of snow this week!

Same reaction I had about Sunapee (where I'm headed tomorrow). I'm taking a group up and the group sales guy was raving about all the new snow they have. Then I asked "are you grooming?" and he then got all embarassed and said "yeah, all over the place." Told him to tell them to leave some stuff on the Sun Bowl untouched. He then said "well, the glades are open!"

ragged is the opposite. They're not 100% open according to the trail report, and they're listing nothing as groomed. But their snocountry report says they are grooming. It's confusing.

I was at Stratton today. They groomed just about the entire WC. I think there was a line down the middle with some bumps, but nothing like what was there last Sunday. Woods were good with decent coverage on top of boiler plate, but another nice dump and they'll be in good shape. Not sure what they were thinking about mowing down all the bumps.
