I made my first ever Trip to Thunder Ridge in NY today after work. I wasn't sure what to expect after seeing that there were only 5 trails open, but they said they had bumps and seeing that Sundown was closed (meaning that I didn't have to work tonight) I figured I'd give it a chance.

The ride from work took just under an hour, as Google Maps said it would be. Traffic was a non-issue and it was fairly easy to find. I got there to a almost empty lot and very few people on the hill. I bought my ticket and booted up in the nice weather on the deck, then realized that I was going to be way too hot in my jacket, so I ended up hoofing all my stuff back to my car to change to a t-shirt.

It was probably close to 6 by the time I finally got on the lift, with the limited terrain I figured 3 hours would be plenty, so I wasn't in too much of a rush. I met up with Sotto and some of his crew on the first run and skied with them for the remainder of the night.

The bumps were clearly visible from the lift.

The Face is the trail that had the bumps, it's not particularly long, but it got the legs moving and was lots of fun. After racing ended they left the trail alone and let it bump up naturally. I must say that I'm impressed by the end result, not much in the way of zipper lines, but some pretty big deep bumps formed. There's a lot of snow on the trail were the bumps are, I didn't see anything resembling burnt out spots in troughs, though there was some mud hopping needed to get to the trail from the lift, that just added to the fun for me though.

The company was good too, we could have probably got in several more runs, if not for all the chatting I was doing. It was a nice mellow pace, and I learned a lot about Thunder Ridge and the passion that Greg (Sotto) has for the place.

Thanks for the Hospitality, you guys have a good thing going there. I'll be happy to come back at some point, hopefully when there's bumps.

I've often thought of moving up there, still commutable to lover Manhattan. How's it compare to Sundown?

Dork,

I live 15 minutes from there. It's a great area and much closer to the mountains and still a sane commute.

I didn't get a true feel for the whole place, since it wasn't completely open, but the part that I skied was definitely smaller vert wise. It looks like they have more acreage, and there is a lift that goes up higher. The layout seems a little funky, but it's pretty spread out, so I bet it doesn't seem crowed when there's a lot of people there (definitely wasn't a problem last night ;) ).

BTW - If you live near me I wouldn't recommend following the Google Maps directions to get you over to 202 in New Milford to go home, if you drive a car at least. Part of the route was on a fairly desolate stretch of dirt road that was fairly soft in spots. Especially at the end of the dirt where I had to keep my speed up to avoid getting stuck in the mud, and in the process bottomed out pretty good...

Maybe it's the best route, but it made me nervous being in what appeared to be the middle of nowhere, with no cell reception, in a fairly low car with a cast aluminum oil pan that's known to crack open and spill it's contents when it comes in contact with hard objects...

It was a pleasure to ski with you Brian. Glad you were able to get over before we closed for the season. Were are going to pull the plug after tonight and shut down. Getting to and from the lifts is becoming an issue. Hope I get the chance to ski with you and some of the other members sometime.

I should have warned you about that dirt road, sorry. I have bottomed out there in the past. It is pretty isolated and that route only saves a few minutes on the trip.

I'm glad I made it too. Can't say I'm surprised to hear that you're closing after tonight, it was awfully thin in spots last night...

No problem on the dirt road. Is there was way to avoid it while still following the same general route?

We were able to push out all we had to cover some spots but have no more reserves close enough to make a difference after today.

Ya there is an other way if you went straight instead of making that right to the road that turns to dirt. You can turn at the next right onto kirby hill rd and that brings you onto CT route 37 and then you could follow that into new milford

Not as steep as the steepest sections of Gunny and Temptor, maybe more like much of Stinger.

thanks. I was terrified of "the face" when i was learning there

got to go back and bring my kids but i guess it will have to wait for next season. i've got many fond memories of that place.

You should definitely go back and check the place out. Fools Delight looked like it would have been fun while it was open. I guess they basically just blew a bunch of big whales on it and left them there for the season. There was still a lot of snow in the middle of it last night, unfortunately there was no way to get to what was left, so it was just going to waste.
