ick, as a non-smoker, i would rather people smoke in the bar than on the lift. at least in the bar, you can walk away from a smoker or leave. on a lift, you are stuck breathing the crap. worst place to smoke EVER, imo. really impolite. and just asking the person you are riding the chair with doesn't count cause you still breathe it in two chairs down wind.

Angus, were those beads and undies hanging on a tree at Ski Sundown? I saw a set of beads hanging in a tree a couple of weekends back.
There are a ton of mountains that have bead and underwear trees.

In regard to smoking on the lift or in the liftline, I agree with River and I think it is absolutely obnoxious. I don't want to be breathing in your smoke. I have to say I hate it in bars even more though since you go home smelling like an ashtray. I was very glad when most cities passed smoking bans in bars and restaurants.

Ed Abbey, writer and conservation, always bragged about throwing his beer cans out the window on the free-way as the area was certainly not a wilderness, but an already badly blemished and abused piece of land as a result of the free-way.

Well. That makes perfect sense. The logic chain is undeniable. Instead of lessening the impact of a freeway on the wilderness by not driving his car on it and thusly slowing down the road errosion and making no contribution to run off and emissions pollution, this genius not only makes the problem worse, but is then compelled to brag about it.

And not only that he worsens the problem using a product produced using barley and corn from farms which irreversibly "scarred" the landscape of the Great Plains and aluminum from mines which are anything but environmentally friendly. Not to mention the "scars" left in the manufacturering of all this. I don't even have to get started on the car he drives.

At least I know what to get both you and him for birthdays- the extra tall Little Giant ladder with which you can dismount your horses.

I agree completely! I HATE being forced to breath that crap in while I ride the lift up, or while I'm standing in the lift line, which is even worse IMNSHO. I go to the mountains to enjoy the fresh air...

Don't ever go skiing with me after I've eaten chili.
I'll take that into consideration, thanks!

Although, I'd rather someone ripped a big fart in front of me than lit up...

That's why my son hates being on the lift with me after lunch...

Wait, I now have a response for smokers on the lift (courtesy of Steve Martin)...

"Mind if I smoke?"
"No, go ahead. Mind if I fart?"

I noticed at Startton last week that every other gondola reeked of stale cigarette smoke. If some tool lit up while I was in the gondola, we would be having some words.

If it is on the lift, and the smoker is not right next to me and the wind is blowing the stink away, then go nuts and kill yourself.

I thought skiing was a healthy sport. You don't see many runners taking a break and whipping out a cancer stick. It doesn't really seem to fit in with the lifestyle.

The mountains where resorts are have been cleared of hundreds/thousands of acres of forest, and subsequently habitat, for trails, lifts and as popularity of a place grows, the endless cancerous development of second homes. Popularity of a resort brings in a major influx of people and motor traffic to an area that is often an alpine environment and not capable of sustaining the traffic, emissions and wastes.

If we're skiing at a place that is continuing to cut forest for runs and homes, speeding up their lifts to serve more people, are we helping to "throw trash on the ground". Which is worse? Decreasing wild spaces or some un-sightly wrappers and beer cans (which taste darn good while skiing!).

i can see a point here. people complain about relativley insignificant trash but not the real abuse that has taken place at big resorts.

I prefer the Honeymooners version of this between Ralph and Ed...

Ed: "Mind if I smoke?"
Ralph: "I don't care if you burn."

If I recall correctly, his real reasoning (in "The Monkeywrench Gang" wasn't it?) is that the cans on the side of the road act as reflectors, helping other dirivers see the edge of the road.

Abbey was a writer in the sense that he wrote some stuff, and a conservationist in the sense that most of his writings had to do with outdoors affairs. While often an enjoyable read, I think Abbey may be more accurately termed a rabble-rouser, at best, and a terrorist at worst.

Still a monkeywrench upside the head of lift litterers isn't a bad idea.

I've thought the same thing. I've even been to an area where they have trash barrels under the lift so its kind of like a game to get the trash in...

I've seen that too. I think it's pretty disgusting, and I'm not normally the type who admires nature. I just don't see the point of having trash areas under lifts. People should be able to hold their garbage. It's also, as you said, just encouraging people who wouldn't drop trash to try and drop it.

The way I see it is that people are going to drop their trash anyway. You may as well give them a target so that most of it is in one spot. I'd just as rather that no one dropped their crap either, but I don't think thats going to happen anytime too soon....
