Date(s) Skied: 3/29/2009

Resort or Ski Area: Windham

Conditions: Variable. Temps in the mid 50's, rain on and off.

Trip Report: Woke up this morning to some pretty heavy rain here in NJ, but since I had to use the voucher or waste it, I decided to drive up anyway. Raining until just before I got to Kingston, then it turned into a mist. I was getting optimistic. Pulled into the parking lot around 9AM and noticed a lot of green. Maybe a total of 15 cars in the lot, and the guy who pulled in next to me was an employee.

Got booted up and cashed in my voucher at group sales. I saw that A, C and D lifts were spinning. As I approached A lift, I saw the closed sign hanging up. Bummer. I went to D lift, asked the lifties for the scoop, and they told me delayed opening as some snow is pushed around up top.

Finally at 9:45 the lifts opened up. I got 2nd car up. Not much to say on the conditions. Nothing was groomed and I saw no evidence of any snow moving activity. Snow was pretty hard, all things considered. The most challenging part was not the trail, but navigating a way down. It rained on and off several times, and the sun came out for a little bit also, which was really nice. I didn't even use my goggles today, it felt best just to go au natural.
Anyway, I skied 8 runs for a total of 10,300 feet of vertical. I was really glad I got out today. Besides from the conditions, it was great to be outside in the mountains today. The fresh air was fantastic, had a nice sweet earthy smell. I actually turned off my ipod, to take in the sounds of spring, birds chirping and babbling streams were quite soothing. I should have brought some blueberries with with me. There was a great vibe on the mountain today, everyone on the lifts would be cheering on the few people actually crazy enough to ski today. Stopped off at the Bavarian Manor in Purling for a Paulander lager and some homemade potatoes pancakes.

Here's some photo's of the day.

Rooter You are a TRUE Diehard to ski those Fugly conditions --- :D :D
WOW What can I say to that? Thanks WD, I just make that my new sig ;). I just freakin love to ski, although sometimes I'm lacking in the skills department. You know how the whole good day/bad day thing goes...well no matter how you slice it, I had a good day.

It was a little bittersweet, because I usually only ski Windham mid-winter or after a decent dump, so to see it so barren (for the 1st time) was a bit sad.

Enjoyed the TR, Root DKJ, especially those photos. Otherwise I wouldn't have believed that Windham was open. Bravo (x2) ... for going skiing, and for having the presence of mind to take photos in those lousy conditions and then post a trip report.

Kind of nice having the place to yourself though. You could have lined up beer bottles under the lift and shot them with a bb gun on the way up!

Who knew gnome women could be so stacked. :p

Yeah, she gets a lot of attention at the bar.

Yeah. I read on their website they are shutting down mid-week, and will be closing next weekend. I personally don't think they are going to make it unless the bulldoze some snow around.

One of the ski patrol guys told me that they stopped making snow presidents weekend. With no natural in March, that's what you get.

Don't you worry never fear -- Belleayre has tons of snow and will be open at least as long as groomsville (Hunter) and maybe a week longer -- then the Vermont shuffle begins!

Groomsville...I think thats finally a compliment. Years ago their grooming sucked. They still leave lower K27 and Crossover bumped up.
