I came across this picture on the internet, this is from Le Massif in Quebec. They claim a triple black diamond run. Anyone skied it? What do you think of a triple black rating (a little over the top)? Also, know of any other triple blacks out?

well, tramline at cannon, paradise at mad river, and the face chutes at jay are only a single diamond, so yea, a little over the top. but it is always amusing kicking around the resorts that try to make their terrain look harder than it is by adding additional diamonds! (*cough* stowe *cough*).

I do prefer that they have the additional diamond ratings though, it allows you to know the difficulty of the trail better.

It is all subjective. Like others have said some of the toughest trails here in the Northeast are single diamnonds, becuase they never changed their systems to go to double or triple diamonds.

I've been to Le Massif and that trail us used by the Canadian Olympic ski team for training. They built a man-made hill at the top of it to bring it up to where it could be an official race course. I was told it usually isn't even open to the general public because it is so difficult.

Here is another resort called Mount Bohemia in Michigan, anyone ever heard of it. It also claims a whole area of triple black. Actually the whole mountain is single and double blacks, with like 1-2 blues. I realize they want to get the point across it must be tough, but come on, label according to mountain. Anyways, check this place out, it only has 900ft of vertical in uppper michigan, but pics they have online look pretty gnarly, and plus they have already received 127" of snow this year.

Wow. Their video is one of the most hilarious things I have seen in a while.

After watching that video they defiantly have way harder terrain than anything inbounds in the east.

Okemo has a double diamond named DOUBLE DIAMOND and it's just a medium pitch glade run that's been seriously thinned out.

Bolton Valley also has several named double diamonds, notably Lost Boyz, Preacher and a new trail they just opened.

Either way, the double diamonds out here are not that much worse than the single diamonds. If its not groomed and goes in and out of trees, its automatically a double diamond in the northeast. Go out West, or to the Alps, whole different ball game, but then again the terrain there does very a bit more.

Plenty of challenging terrain at Stowe. All the best stuff is off the map of course. But for inbounds obviously Goat and Starr from the top are a step above the rest, I would also add the lower pitch of Waterfall, it's never open, but it's on the map and has a 20-30 foot cliff drop to flattish (east coast) transition. Also, Tres Amigos from the top...all these are on the map and within the East Coast context are probably worthy of the double diamond rating. RC, you skied the lower waterfall? A few tech lines down it besides bombing out in the flat or using the go-around.....I think it rates 2Ds.
