In looking at the Madonna trail map, I notice 2 trails (prolly the same one, upper and lower) labeled triple blacks.

Anyone have experience with these trails? I can't really see any name on them, they look like they might be tree runs.

Are they really deserving of a triple black status?

I've never been to Smuggs

The interactive trail map has the name. It's Black Hole. Yeah, it's really just 1 trail.

Anyone skied it?

Well, its one higher than two, init? I mean, most ski areas are limited to double diamond, there's no where to go, right? That's why Smuggs has triple diamonds, to give that extra umph.

(But why not just make two diamonds that much more difficult?) Because Smuggs goes to three.

The Black Hole? No it's not deserving of triple black status...it's pure marketing hype..Most double blacks in the east aren't deserving of that status either..a bunch of bullspit..

Never skied it, but I am sure it is marketing hype. Smuggs should be ashamed of themselves.

I've skied Black Hole before and it is definitely one of the tightest glades in the east and it has some really hairy spots. It's a fun trail, but definitely not a glade where you can just let it fly. I would have to agree with HPD that I enjoy the Back Bowls more.

It is harder than anything at Kmart, as are all of the double diamonds at Smuggs. That being said, it should still be a double diamond. There is nothing that really deserves its own category. I suggest that you try and get to Smuggs this winter - it's definitely one of the best in the east.

Bah. Any advanced or expert skier worth his/her salt should know this is spin, so there's no reason to be so offended...

Some of the other trails on the hill have tougher spots. With that said, you can get yourself into some trouble if you're not qualified. I recieved one of my first concusions on that part of Smuggs. It was a nice day and everything... just didn't work out for me

At Blue mountain there are two double diamonds which are both groomed daily..and I ski them them while drinking a beer with my poles in the other hand...so compared to that the Black Hole should be a quadruple diamond..

Ski areas can rate things however they like..It's all relative so if Smuggs feels the Black Hole is tougher than it's other double diamonds..I can see why it's rated a triple black. I'm not a big fan of on the trail map glades because any first timer to the resort can find their way into the woods which means more snow being scrapped off and moguls in the woods..I like when some ski resorts like Jackson Hole also have double blues...mad steezy yo

I worked at Smuggs for 4 years back before The Black Hole and Robins Run were even on the trail map. Black Hole isn't triple blac k that's fer sure but you'd better be paying attention or you'll prolly be getin a ride down in a sled. Like HPD and a couple others have said the Back Bowls at Smuggs are where it's really at. You have to find someone to take you back there though cause it aint on the map. Go to Smuggs and have fun. It's a cool place with a great old school vibe.
