I'd be interested in reading the article when it comes out. I checked Fosters and TNH to no avail.

I used to serve on the Judicial Board at UNH. They were the ones responsible for evictions and the like.

Was this a student dorm owned by UNH? If so, and he's a squatter and not really renting from there, #1) UNH is out the money that he's probably not paying and #2) he has not signed the housing agreement, thus has no responsibility for the space he is in all the while UNH is liable for him in that space.

Anyone can get housing at UNH if they really want it. Why does he not have a space there? Money? Not likely, there's plenty of Stafford loans to go around. Was he previously evicted from student housing? This is often the case, though I can't say it is here since I haven't seen the story yet.

A lot of times, these squatters were discovered as part of another incident, such as a party bust or a fight. UNH doesn't actively pursue them, but when they come up, they are usually evicted.

What happens when one of these squatters turns out to be a perpetrator of a crime, a rape for instance. The school would get reamed and sued for not maintaining control of who is in the dorm.

So, as unfortunate as the circumstances of discovery are, this is a money, liabiliy and a safety issue.

Based on what I'm reading hear, it appears that UNH is addressing thier issue which may be limited to squatting and/or tresspassing.

If there are other issues they are probably being handled by the Durham Police Department and they may not want to issue any press releases about the matter.

You know you can't make this stuff because no would believe you.
