IMO the free stuff doesn't seem to be as good this year...

Never went before but a free midweek pass to someday bigger and the loaf + a 2 for 1 coupon for k-mart seems pretty good

Speaking of ski porn check out WM's newest. http://www.warrenmiller.com/wmiller/higherground/

so is anyone going to see this movie because they think it will be cool, or just the free stuff...
I've never gone for the stuff. I download all the ticket stuff and then I never get around to using them.
It is an event to go to these movies. I get to see a lot of people I don't get to see until it snows and it's just fun to feel the audience responce. Its almost a party.

Stopped watching ski movies a while ago...

just like regular porn, it's alot more satisfying to actually ski than watch someone else.

The commercialization and unrealistically unending series of sick, exposed lines presented one after the other just got too silly after a while.

Huh..can't think of a subtle way to express what I wnat to say here! ha ha ha ha

Whether people think the movies are uninspired or not isn't important to me..they inspire me and that's what's important to me. I'm still new to skiing... only in my 3rd year and I missed years of movies and snow... I'm giddy like a little kid everytime I see anyone on skis.. except Tanner Hall..

I gotta ask...

How old are you

I think you'll be surprised... I just turned 35 this month.

I was thinking of starting a new thread. But I'm glad I did a search first!

Just to set the scene, it might help to explain where my skiing addiction is at. I put in 11 days last year. At the end of the season I bought new boots, skis, bindings, and poles. My goal is 20+ days this coming season. So when you read the rest of this post, please keep that in mind.

I was flipping around the tube last night and stumbled upon Warren Miller's Impact. I have been bugging my wife since the end of the season about new gear, where to buy a season('s) pass etc. This film has only made things worse. From reading though the posts on this thread it seems like more experienced skiers, or at least the ones who have watched tons of ski porn over the years, are uninspired by what's currently out there. For me, it was the first taste of seeing some talented skiers and snowboarders do some amazing stuff in some of the most beautiful settings in the world. After viewing this film, I am more excited and inspired to make some turns next year and really improve my technique. I also loved the diverse music in the film and Warren's commentary. Time to add more of his films to my Netflix account.

As for the commercialization, IMO its a necessary evil. In order to afford travel, the talent, and a film crew to film such movies, you need lots and lots of money. But don't get me wrong. Although you don't see people hucking themselves off of ledges, I found similar inspiration in low budget films like the ones RivercOil put together (I think it was the Loon vid that I had on my desktop for 3 months).

And to turn this thread on a more positive path... When was your first viewing of ski porn and how did it inspire you?

For me it may be a generation thing....I enjoy Greg Stump Ski Video's (I keep the Blizzard of Ahhh's & Dr Strange Glove right at the front of video library) as well as Warren Miller Video's...the combination of the outrageous cliff jumps and music that hurts my senses produced today just doesn't inspire me…

+1

I have Blizzard of Aaahhs ripped onto a USB hard drive that's sitting on my desk at work. It's running on my 2nd monitor at the moment.

To me, the late-80's Greg Stump films are the best-ever ski movies. They combine superb skiing footage with interesting storyline. They don't have the camp B.S. of most Warren Miller movies. I get really bored with today's typical movie where somebody is straightlining a 60 degree face in Alaska set to garage band music.

I think the Meatheads are far better than Warren Miller. I also think TGR and Matchstick are better than WM. I just don't like his style of film making. After a while all of the TGR and MSP films start to blend together, though.

I have one WM film, one WM Sampler, and two Meathead Films (Born From Ice and Epoch). I have thoroughly enjoyed the Meathead films....great music, film, humor, etc. Really hits the spot for me! I have not seen Schooled. Any input?

Schooled and Elevated are both really good Meathead movies. They are considerably less polished but have much of the same skiing as Born From Ice.

As I said, WM Impact was my first taste. After hearing about some of the other choices out there I will have to expand my horizons. But for me, this film certainly did the trick of inspiring me.

I like all ski movies, but am partial to those from Teton Gravity and Matchstick because of the longer action shots and less talking. The Warren Miller films are well done and I enjoy them, but I can admit there are segments I will fast forward through because I'm not fond of the skiers or the music or the location.

Warren's Angels? That really turned me off .. Charlotte Moats and Jennifer Sobolowski are great skiers but they were portrayed a little too "girly" and commercialized for my taste. I want to relate to other women skiers and say, "hey, she kicks butt".. I just think it was in poor taste.

I would love to see more films about skiing in the US.. places I might actually go... I'm not likely to end up in Georgia ..the country ...

" Every fall starts with a turn" and "always make an impact" .. I liked that opening..

Here are some suggestions for you:

"Hit List" - MatchStick Productions
"High Society" -MSP
"Tangerine Dream" - Teton Gravity
"Cold Fusion" - Warren Miller
"High Life" -TGR

Just to name a few...

I'll check out some of those titles.

I agree on some of those segments in Impact. The one about the guy driving the plow left me scratching my head....

Well, I for one love TGR's Further, its one of my all time favs. Jeremy Jones ripping virgin Alaska pow to Ozzy's Over the Mountain never, and I mean, never gets old.

That being said, and I watch mostly snowboard flicks, ALL PARK SCENES SUCK. I can see that shit everyday at Whiteface or any other mountain. But big mountain stuff, even if Ive watched the same scene ten times, still gets my blood flowing. However, Im not going to drop 30 bones on ski flick, when half of it is spent filming some guy talking or hiking up a coulier. Ive been there, it sucks climbing straight up for an hour, I dont need video represention of some guy doing that. I know what hes been through, and I know the sense of accomplishment, I dont need to see it in video. An assumption works fine for me there.

I really don't follow ski movies all that much. Either because I don't have the time, the interest, or the knowledge of where to see one to care all that much.

I have not seen Born From Ice... I gotta buy that.

I dl'ed a bunch of TGR films from the IM thing that was posted in Misc a while back and... eh. Some cool stuff, but for the most part they all blended together after a while. I would classify that as most uninspired. I saw Yearbook and Hit List by MSP and for the most part that blended pretty seamlessly with TGR as well.

I've seen Storm and Impact and SnoWonder and parts of older stuff circa the SnoWonder era. I thought they were all well done, however I think WM himself imparted more humor and better footage when he was still the photographer or director at the very least. That is how shots like the guys sailing the J24's on Lake Tahoe got into his old films, but you'd never see stuff like that in recent editions. Recent WM films, aside from the man himself still narrating, have become uninspired as well, IMHO.

Of course I've also seen SnoWhat and is one of the best ski films ever made.
