Keep wanting to take my wife to Whistler some season. Really going to have to pick my moment. No idea when this footage occurred.

We went mid-April last year. The kids' spring break was so late we had to pick a place that would for sure be open. Stayed in a nice slopeside condo right by the Blackcomb gondola, it was around $100 a night. Was 1 bedroom with a murphy bed in the living room. Lines were short to non-existent. Got lucky and had a few powder days. Only negative was the Monday was the last Whistler day for the season, so we only got 2 days on that side. If they have another late vacation, there's a good chance I'd go back. So yeah, mid-April would be my suggestion. Ideally last weekend of Whistler, so you can get some skiing on that side.

Kicking Horse is on my bucket list.

Missed all the fun this weekend due to travel. Looking to call in sick and get out on the slopes Friday at Wildcat. Snow like this makes it hard for Vail to ruin the experience.

Yeah, I agree even though Whistler was great last year. I went interior 4 years in a row at one point. Doesn't work too well when a bunch are closed for the season, and my wife has no interest in traveling around.

pretty sure the tiktok concern is mostly about Chinese company having access to us govt devices
It's about spy networks being able to get a phone into a meeting: government, business or anywhere the can "bug" to steal secrets (for their benefit). Forgein policy think tanks have been all over this since the game pong.
"Do you want to play a game"

Tick tock is easier than sending spy's to use laser mics and the like. As long as there are governments, there will be spies and the beat goes on...

i dont think anyone forgot that. i think we all know that bolton, jay, sugarbush, smuggs, and mad all dropped almost all ropes. stowe is in the same snow zone. clearly they are approaching terrain expansion differently and more conservatively than all their local comparables.

I do think there are at least a few people that forgot that based on some other comments on this forum...but the point is also valid that there's been a rather major difference in how quickly ropes are being dropped on natural terrain at one specific resort in the region.

To play devil's advocate a bit though, as dhs pointed out, Stowe started becoming more conservative a while ago. So is this really a "Vail sucks" issue? I don't like Vail, but I'm not really sure they can take blame for this one...

Back in the 90's as they were expanding, Okemo was very lax about this sort of thing. The terrain is super low angle so nobody seemed to care if you ducked ropes and went and found better stuff. Hell, I remember a makeshift cabin where kids would gather in the woods and smoke. Fast forward to 2021 and there were caution signs that said "moguls ahead" on a trail that had no actual moguls - just end-of-the-day small piles - and ropes everywhere. Not sure if that is entirely a Vail thing. Wildcat seems to get away with keeping stuff open long enough to garner complaints from vacationers. And ropes are dropped throughout the day when applicable.

I would argue that the double blacks at Stowe take a bit more to fill in than pretty much any of the other places listed, but that doesn't appease the pitchfork crowd.

I was at Bolton yesterday, you definitely were hitting shit under the snow so its not like its full on game on yet.

thats the point. at bolton, sugarbush, smuggs, and mad river they let you choose for yourself if you want to fuck up your bases skiing thin steeps. stowe doesn't trust their guests to safely choose for themselves apparently.

That’s because Vail operates more like an insurance company. They take very little risk. They closed profitable summer activities at Attitash probably because things like the Alpine Slide are too risky for them.

Double black terrain that was BARE GROUND less than a week ago probably takes more than two light snow events to cover up, but you know, fuck vail for not letting you be a moron.

Everywhere but Mad River does not have the terrain that Stowe does, not even close.

DHS point though is legit, Stowe brings a certain flavor of clientele that is going to affect how patrol operates.

vail doesnt stop me from doing anything as i do not ski vail resorts.

sugarbush has plenty of sketchy rocky steeps that have been wide open since the first of the two light snow events Friday. i had a ton of fun choosing to be a moron.

perhaps the most apt comparison, madonna liftline is open at smuggs. as is black hole.

stowe's terrain is closed because stowe is ultra conservative about opening terrain. that is also effected by their lame ass bougie clients, which you acknowledge yourself. these are not controversial statements as we all have eyes and internet connections.

the front four arent some mystical super terrain that requires extra snow to open. every single stowe steep is closed.

As a Patroller it definitely depends on the clientele......

Lots of stuff (naturals) open at the Cat that would roped off many places like Stowe.

When we went to Yellowstone I couldn't believe what was closed. tons of stuff...
By East coast standards it was Good 2 Go. But "OHHH NO there are rocks under there, We can't open that. Our members would not be happy if their skis got damaged"
No shit.....

Go to Europe. Ropes ? None. Closed ? Not if you can get to it

For someone who doesn't ski Vail properties, you sure seem to give way to many fucks about their patrol openings.
