If Telluride really does work on fairly small margins, they maybe he'll just sell to Vail or Alterra if this becomes too much of a headache. If that town thinks it dislikes Chuck Horning, they may be in for a rude awakening.
I've heard Chuck is super hard to work with. I'm not so sure Vail or Alterra would be worse to deal with over him.

Re: Telluride

I was SHOCKED to see the headline that they are closing for what is a big holiday break. That really makes the PCMR mess last year pale in comparison. A HARD closure will really hurt. I am not sure if they are doing well snow-wise. That area can be feast or famine for snow.

I heard they may have closed down regardless. It was raining today up to 11k in elevation in the San Juan’s. This winter is seriously f-d up out west so far. The desert though, has been incredible!

Well, apparently Stevens Pass skiers and riders from Seattle cannot access the ski area. Not easily at least. And as to Vail returning money or rolling over passes? Hell no. Folks can STILL drive an extra two hours each way to get there!

Why should they? They are open and operating.

The problem here is with the State not Vail.

Allegedly the final offer from Telluride had patroller wages up to 39.84 per hour (top of the wage scale) for reference.

The reality is that in a community with a median home sale price of $2.4M like Telluride, even paying someone $100 an hour isn't a "living wage."

I have zero clue why a working class person would ever choose to live in Telluride, Jackson, Park City, Aspen etc. The writing was on the wall for me when I left Stowe at 25 years old and Stowe isn't half as bad as ski towns out West. I saw back then that even the GM of the ski area barely had a salary high enough to support buying a decent home. I wasn't going to toil away in poverty for 25 years in hopes of landing a job like that to still barely get by.

The only way any of this changes is if regulations change making it cost prohibitive for investors and wealthy people from buying up real estate that isn't their primary home. This is kinda true everywhere in the country. Real Estate costs should be inline with local wages.

Like Wildcat, Stevens is the type of place Vail should not own. No bed base, not much $ to be made on the incidentals. It’s simply been seized for market share and no other discernible reason. There are better stewards for ski areas like this.

This all says to me that I can expect the cost of our Ikon and Epic passes to rise substantially over the coming years.
