Date(s) Skied: Friday Night 2/27/09 (well... actually 2/28/09)

Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett, MA

Conditions: Late-April... Running Rivers on the Trails, Bare Spots, Rain, 50s

Trip Report:

Well for the first time since its inception, 24 hour night was an epic fail. Real surprised it wasn't postponed. Got to the mountain at 11 PM and it was pouring, so I hung around for a while. Around midnight it went down to a drizzle so I set out in a hoodie and jeans (tried snowpants... too warm) and hit Conifer and Hitchcock before the rain started coming down again. Conifer was alright... some rivers at the top but decent potatoes on most of it. Hitchcock was a mess... almost all ice, lots of bare spots. Look Mom park was trashed and will take a lot of fixing... the entire left ride of the trail is rotted out. Even the summit trails were getting down to the dirt in spots (so much for that 40-52" base).

Started raining again at about 12:15 so I decided screw it... if the conditions were good I would've waited it out and skied the rest of the night but it just wasn't worth it. Oh well, till next year I guess. I'm actually hoping to do all 24 hours next year. So that's my report... tomorrow is going to suck royally up there so you probably don't want to go. Twin storms coming Sunday and Monday will get everything going good again.

Wow, went last year and had fun and was still considering last night even with the weather until I stayed up late reading...happy I didn't!

Yeah. It's a shame because it's always a fun night and skiing during the sunrise is cool, but I guess last night wasn't meant to be. I'm quite surprised they didn't move it a week or something because it always draws a huge crowd (they were packed to capacity at 3 AM last year) but last night I parked in row 1 at 11. They missed out on a money maker by leaving it on last night.
